| If you like crazy sounds, you could pick up a second hand Pearl FG-01 for under 50. I have one and you can get a wide variety of sounds from standard flanger to chorus and even a sort of pseudo-theremin when it self-ossillates. Built like a tank too. |

For me the HF2 does the job. I use it virtually all the time. I generally like a chorus sound and have used almost all the Boss ones, but the HF2 is somehow better for me.
So... You can get nice lush chorus (I use it for this a lot) It'll do the standard jetplane sounds, with the res on max it will also self oscillate. I use this feature on one of my own songs (go to my website and play the track Playing With Fire... the oscillating HF2 is pretty obvious) It can also get a very useable pseudo-tremelo (think of John-Paul Jones' No Quarter sound). |

Never heard of Pearl... Will have to check it out. I've never thought of using a Bass flanger but something worth considering The HF-2 is pretty nice indeed... Ah choices |

Totally slipped my mind... http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/74345 pretty well priced too. I'll definately keep an eye out for one to "try before I buy". Sigh my gf must be sick of going guitar shops
One tiny thing... Does it have that stupid input jack that requires an adaptor (1/8 tip positive or something?) or does it have a normal power jack input thingy I forgot the name for Could I just use a daisy chain coming out of my NS-2?
How can you be sick of going to guitar shops???? It's something i never get tired of doing.
and i am talking about this pedal

Trust me I aint, I drag my girl to lots of them all over the midlands lol, Shes sick of it not me . Yeah I knew what you meant but I've put off buying one of them before not because of sound quality but because of the immense amount of space one takes up... The Stereo EM looks worthwhile when its half the size |

Wouldnt a MIJ BF-2 exceed my not wanting to spend more than 100~ semi limit thing? Unsure on average prices when it comes to "Vintage" pedals. |

I picked up a MIT BF-2 a couple of years ago when prices were still going up for if i remember correctly for 40...it's been on and off my pedalboard only because i can't really find a use for flanging or phasing it the traditional sense in our stuff anymore..i like turning the manual and res controls down and just use the rate and depth as a pesudo chorus sound where i think it sounds very good..cascading it into a CE-2 on the same rate and depth settings give a real thick chorus with a bit of swirl mixed in... ...if you have read some of my recent posts on the tech page i was looking for advice on how to rackmount the BF-2 and CE-2 to make them into a rack unit and instead of cascading them into each other to run them in stereo, one in each channel in my rack.... |

I had a MIJ BF2 as well as my ancient MIJ HF2.
The BF2 was quickly sold. I just thought that it wasn't for me.
The HF2 is now my only compact effect pedal (other than overdrive and delay). |

I got a MIJ BF-2 for about 45 about 15 months ago. They've probably gone up since then, judging by some of the other prices I've seen for comparable MIJs...
The BF-2 is a good flanger. A touch noisy, but has a good strong resonance. The EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress is also a great unit, but its size might put you off. I prefer the sound of it to the BF-2. The Stereo Electric Mistress is a different beast entirely - you lose deep control over the flange and chorus it provides, but you can blend them and adjust the rate. It's not really as much use as a flanger so much as a stereo ambience. I love setting up slow, gentle sweeps that pan around.
I also have a Solec (which can be seen in the Interal Pics thread) and it's interesting - not as much breadth as the BF-2 but sounds slightly sweeter. I breifly had an old Rocktek, and that sounded mad as a bucket of bees, but wasn't to my taste and was a bit too plasticky in build. Very cheap though at less than a tenner.
If you're careful you could try using a delay as a flanger. Set the repeat rate very short, turn up the feedback and adjust to flavour... I have an old Digitech rack I use like this sometimes.

Thats made me wanna try it even more, really into ambient sounds.

I decided to give that thread the once over, struck me as very interesting but no idea how you guys do it... I'm terribly unexperienced at electronics and metal work etc |

Hey, I'm serious! Stop laughing, all of you.
Ok, it might not be winning any beauty contests but I love the little bastard. And I can garauntee it'll be less $$ than anything else mentioned here so far (okay, except maybe the Rocktek that nath mentioned). :)

...neither do i...well i have an idea and could probably build it to the stage where everything was mounted and ready to go but if i hit problems with impedences or grounding issues i wouldn't have a clue... ..i had a good few DOD pedals before i went to boss...their not bad and while i didn't have the flanger, one of the pedals i had was the FX-65 stereo chorus..a good analogue chorus but Dod pedals can be a bit noisy with hiss compared to boss...

Hmmm....it really depends what you're after dude
it ranges from having some extreme-out there stuff or subtle-ness...the harshness and accuracy of digital or the warmth of an analog.
For me i do own a BF2....was impressed by Boss DD2 and CE2 but not quite so for this one. still a good flexible overall pedal but i want something more subtle. By the way guys, Ibanez do have cool flanger units.
Least we forget the FL301DX, FL9, Soundtank Flange and their new baby. Paul gilbert AP9-AirPlane flanger. I reckon FL9 and AP9 are winners in my list....esp the vintage 80's FL9....such warmth and fatness to notes that fills in gaps |
