There's still different opinions on this one. My ears are not able to hear the difference between a MIJ SD-1 and one made in Taiwan. The corresponding DS-1s I'm able to hear the difference but I can't really say that the MIJ version is better. |

Think I read somewhere the SD-1 has relativley been remained the same since it first came into production in '81 The only difference between the two, as far as I know is a the removal of R31 and D3 in the MITs, and jumpering it. Those parts are connected from the input jack to the ac adapter. Theres a section in the indyguitarist book that suggests the same. What is that for?
I have both, but my MIT one is modded to heck, so can't offer an opinion between the two. One thing I did notice is both have old style adapters, the ones that slide onto the chassis. The newer ones poke through the chassis. |

i use that when i buy pedals from a certain guitar shop in ottawa. they like to put price stickers on the rubber foot pad and they never come off clean.
i have also used Armor All Tire cleaner on rubber to spiff it up.
IT REALLY WORKS!! |

Those two components were there to take the 12 volts from the old ACA adapter down to 9-ish. Jumpering them allows the pedal to be used with a PSA (9 volts regulated) adapter.

AFAIK all SD-1s still use the old-style adapter jack.

I have compared my MIT & MIJ SD-1s several times, I really want to hear the mojo with my own ears. Theres a slight more darkness in the MIJ, but you have to listen close for this. This could be explained with better component quality and soldering technique, the ageing of components (this is of course not always a good thing). I have compared MIJ & MIT CE-2, DS-1 and some more, in those cases its much more easy to hear the difference. By the way Im not saying that a MIJ DS-1 is better than a MIT one, just different sounding, I like both.

they're also guilty of switching (replacing?) knobs. think they had a ds-2 with one blue knob last time i was there |

You guys in Ottawa are lucky. the music stores out here on the left coast would charge a bit more for that blue knob |

IHMO, new MIT SD-1's sound too tinny -- the 'tone' knob has very little usable/musical range. (FWIW, the rest of my signal chain is usually a high-gain bridge humbucking pickup in a bolt-neck guitar, with the tone knob up all the way, and plugged into a high-gain tube amplifier with the eq set relatively flat.)
in 2003 I had a new SD-1 sent to AnalogMan for 'silver' modding, but keeping the Boss-style asymmetrical clipping, and when it came back it sounded so good that I was able to give my MIJ SD-1 a well-earned retirement. but of course, new 2007 SD-1's may sound completely different... YMMV. |
