The other guitarist in our band is looking for a new all valve combo for around the UK £500 mark. He's considering the Marshall Haze 40w combo and I wondered if anyone has one of these and what do they think of it?

Or, can you give us any alternatives please?

We play mostly classic 70's rock, so he'll need a good crunch sound and a decent clean channel. He also uses a BCB-60 loaded with the usual assortment of drive, chorus, flanger, etc.

I mostly play lead in the band and run through a 100w Marshall JVM 410c combo. Wattage isn't that much of an issue as we usually mic the combos up through the PA.

Thanks for your help guys.

Howdy Bro

Sort of in the same boat myself as i'm looking to scale down on the amp front..i love the vintage amps i have, but i could do without the weight plus they are all 35+ years old and i'm out two/three nights some weeks now so i'm constantly looking over my shoulder waiting for a bang.... plus i have the rack with the power amp and the 1x12's to spread the sound anyway so all i need is something a bit smaller and reliable for my main amp in my rig...been looking at the Egnater rebel 20 head and the matching 1x12 cab(DeFrag loves this amp)but i'm not 100% it would do your bandmate as it is a single channel amp and more Fendery in the crunch end of things also 20 watts might no be enough..there is a 30 watt version out as well with two channels and the Hughes+Kettner statesmen also look quite good for spec around that price mark....as you know i use my SD twintube as my preamp and it has a crunch/lead channels so all i need is a solid single channel amp...would getting a good tube two channel overdrive like this or the Blackstar dual overdrive and a solid 2nd hand tube amp with a good clean tone be an option for you mate..? since your using a marshall maybe something like a Fender hotrod deluxe or deville or a Vox AC-30 might be a nice addition to the sound rather than both of you using Marshalls....

2nd hand Mesa/Boogie.

Rock solid construction, will last forever.
Oh, and a rather nice array of sounds too.

I used to own one years ago.

For '70s classic rock I'll second the vote for a Boogie, and a Vox wouldn't be a bad choice either.
A Fender or Fender-style might be okay as well...just depending on the type of '70s classic rock you're doing('70s classic rock has a lot of "substyles" if you know what I mean) and your friend's role in the overall context.

That Marshall Haze combo looks really cool, except it doesn't have a Master volume, so I guess it's pretty hard to keep the clean channel pristine clean on higher output levels.

I just can't imagine why someone would ever want a pristine clean guitar sound
