hey guys, the guys at jim dunlop have ignored my email, so im resorting to the clever minds residing at this forum.
i need to know how much current the following pedals draw:
- MXR Distortion + (vintage - 1979) - Dunlop Fuzz Face - Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus (USA) - Electro-Harmonix Small Stone phaser (Russia)
i can't find ANY info on the net... thanks to anyone who can help :) |

Hi Goran Thanks for the link to the current consumption table.

| thanks goran, ive ordered a multimeter online and will follow the guidelines in that link to measure the current draw myself... i'll add them to this thread once i know. cheers |

Hi cyberpunk409 If you need any help with the meter, just ask. It can be a bit tricky to measure low currents, and if you don't put the meters leads, back into the voltage reading holes/setting, you can or might pop the internal fuse, if you then try to read voltage in the current mode.
Happens to the best of us, maybe even me
Which type of meter did you order? There are some really tricked out, & good meters out there, these days.

its a cheapo one...
New Digital Voltmeter - DMM Multimeter Ohm Meter Model A830L
Continuity Beeper - Diode Tester Transister Tester Battery Tester DC Voltage: 200mV /2V/ 20V / 200V / 500V(+-0.5-0.8% + 2-3digits) AC Voltage: 200V / 500V (+-1-1.2% + 10digits) DC Current: 200uA/2mA/ 20mA / 200mA / 10A (+- 1.0-3.0% of rdg + 2digits) Resistance: 200/2K/20K/200K/2M Ohm(+-1.0-1.5% 3digits) Standard Accessories Test Lead, Battery, Manual 3.5 digits Max 1,999 Count Display Data Hold Display Backlight Power 9V Battery(6F22 9VOLT) Low Battery Display Pop out stand
i'm sure it can't be that hard to do... use the multimeter to complete the current and set the reading to DC CURRENCT 200mA :) |

the nice folk at EHX and Dunlop got back to me...
apparently, - the Electro-Harmonix Small Stone (russian) draws 100mA - the Electro-Harmonix Small Clone (USA) draws 100mA (don't know if that's true of if they just couldn't be bothered finding out the exact current draw so just over-estimated it at 100mA to cover themselves) - the Jim Dunlop MXR Distortion+ (M-104) draws 20mA - the Jim Dunlop Fuzz Face reissue draws 750 pico-farads
my question is... who on earth gives current in units of farads??? this is a copy of their EXACT response: "The Fuzz Face draws 750 pico-farads and the M-104 draws 20mA. I hope this helps. Feel free to give me a call at 1-800-722-3434"
can anyone convert this into something meaningful for me? thanks.

anyone...?
what is the current (ampere) equivalent of 750 pico-farads ???
can it even be converted into current? |

Hi cyberpunk409 I think, that Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, has the only conversion table, for pico-farads to milliamps, in the known Universe.
pico-farads is the value of a capacitor, & a bloody small value at that, Radio Frequency caps, usually have a value in the pico-farads.
pico-farads is like (10 to the minus 12), and what the hell it has to do with current is anybodies guess.
Say hi to the Mad Hatter if you catch up with him, he was last seen drinking a cup of teas with the, Jim Dunlop Fuzz Face reissue support Techs.
Maybe they meant Pico Amps.
Perhaps you could re-email their reply, back to them, asking them for clarification.

yeah bob, i was dumb struck when i read it, especially with the way they worded it... "The Fuzz Face draws 750 pico-farads". Wouldn't that be like saying something has 9 volts of resistance?!? who does that???
if you've read my other thread you'll know that i've already measured the current of a number of my pedals... the fuzz face is still on its way in the post, so i will measure it as soon as it arrives.
THEN... we will know how many amperes equates to 750 pico-farads, and THEN (using ratio), we will be able to join the mad hatter and the exclusive dunlop team :) |

ok, so got the fuzz face. current draw comes in at under 1 milliamp, around 0.8mA to be exact... although it did flucuate between 0.6mA and 0.9mA
so maybe the clever people at dunlop converted 0.75mA into 750 pico-farads.
0.75mA = 750 mirco-amps 0.75mA = 750000000 pico-amps
who knows why they threw farads into the equation?!?
just thought i'd share my findings :) |
