| I find that the settings on some pedals are quite different depending on the type of pups you have.eg. a metal zone works good on my strat with single coils but I find it almost uncontrolable when I use my les paul with humbuckers. So does anyone have any boss pedal that they prefer using single coils and which which are better for humbuckers. I guess this applies to distortion and o/d mostly |

I really like a BD-2 with humbuckers! I think the OD-1 sounds great with single coils. Then again I think an OD-1 just sounds great all the time!!! |

i find that single coils usually have less headroom than buckers. i find that to drive buckers to distort, you have to feed em more than you would have to feed a single coil. thats why i think light OD's such as BD-2, OD-1 sound best with singles. i find any distortion pedal over half is too much for singles to handle (in my setup anyway). if i want to kick on the MD-2, MT-2, etc ill plug in the bucker equipped guitars.
then again it all depends on what kind of music youre trying for. lately ive been into "strat blues" type stuff (SRV) and a OD-1 into a strat gets me in the ballpark. i only really use buckers for metal. |

bd-2 is my favorite for humbuckers too. I have it on most of the time and then kick in os-2 as well for some dirt. Almost need a separate pedal board for each different guitar

Strato, have you tried the SD-1 with single coils for that SRV sound? You can get this one to sound almost like a TS-9. It is just a little more versatile compared to OD-1. |

I have tried some of the Overdrives with humbucks and the results do surprise me a bit.
We all know when guitarmagzines review pedals they will test them through various amps with several guitars. I guess most of us -when you get a new pedal etc.- will not really try all the set-ups you can think off, so you just may try on the amp and guitar which is nearest to you.
Humbucks overal give you more midrange compared to singles plus there will be more volume. All too obvious eh???
Okay, now the differences with my Jap. SD-1 versus Taiwan SD-1 are more pronounced with humbucks, the Jap. certainly sounds "darker". [humbucks giving you less bright, therefore you hear more midrange from the pedal!!] This is probably due to the chip. [ the pedal sounds very close to a Tubescreamer] Now we all know that this is the case with the SD-1, but then again I could hear the differences so much better, whereas with Singles the differences are more subtle.
At the moment I would not like to say: "Such and such pedal sounds really bad with singles/humbucks, but yes there is a difference, and it does really depend on what kind of sound you are going for at the moment.
For same token we could also ask: "Do you play differently when using humbuck guitar compared to single coil?" I do, as the guitar does make me play in a certain way, the whole feel of the thing makes me react in a certain way and that has an outcome on the kind of music which I may play at the moment.
Same thing of course when using clean sound or distortion as both sounds will make you play different ideas.
On an unplugged electric you may want to put more emphasis on your notes, compostition ect. whereas amplified through some pedals, you may enjoy just the sound you are making, and this could be just holding one note, while the delay is ringing [or the amp is feedbacking etc. etc.] |

good point, visserman. i do play differently with different guitars which will of course affect overall sound.
and yes i like the SD-1 with my single coils although my favorite is the OD-1 with both knobs set at noon |
