What is the differences between these two units besides Pres/Freq on the 1st knob? Japan vs. Taiwan, production dates, labels? Which is more prevalent? The 1st image I found on Google.

With the Bossarea pic I'm guessing labeling the "inner" presence control "Freq" is a typo, as there's no control over the frequency at all. I can only hazard a guess that earlier on in design it was intended that the PQ-4 would provided frequency control over the low end like the PQ-3B did, but eventually that idea was scrapped and a publicity shot (which is what the Bossare pic is right?) was released before it was noticed that the inner knob on the low hadn't been renamed .
Wonder if any typo units were made and got out? Kinda cool find actually 
Edit* I've just gone the google/ebay route and couldn't find a single picture of a physical unit with the presence control labeled FREQ |

The value ranges are also different
Is that a typo too, or does one actually have a wider range?
EDIT: I looked closer, and it might say -/+18, it looks like a 15 though
One of the knobs is clearly different though. |

Nice find DeFrag!!!!
For some time I had 2 PQ-4 and I noticed that the logo (above the rubber pad) was slightly different. There was a difference in boldness of the letters, easy to see if you had the two side by side.

The second picture isn't a photoshopped picture at all. It's a complete photoshopped mockup. I didn't have a PQ-4 at the time (2001-2002) so made the image by cutting out parts from pictures of other pedals. Looks like I got a word wrong. Whoops  |

You shouldn�t have said anything about it and that variation of PQ-4 would be the most sought after Boss pedal ever, more than the Wylde SD-1, the holiest of Holy Grails!
