So, what do you think about those? Have you owned played one? Any particular model you like? What about tunings? String gauges?

Me, I have an Ibanez, RG7321 model. I almost completely switched to this guitar from my first six string Ibanez. It has fixed bridge, 24 frets and passive pickups. I keep it in standard tuning (BEADGbe) most of the time. When I play with my band, however, I tune the 7th string down to A (AEADGbe) so I can play barre chords across all 7 strings. It also makes playing unison with bass a bit easier (unforutnately, the bass player in my band doesn't have a 5 string bass).

What I find a bit annoying is finding a balanced set of strings for a seven string. For example, Ernie Ball sets are 10-13-17-26-36-46-56. See the linear growth? Unfortunately, tension on the strings doesn't follow this. This results in tension on 6th and 7th string to be almost 1kg less than on the other strings. In short, low E and low B are floppier and harder to play. Dean Markley 2504C (10-13-17-30-42-52-60) would solve this perfectly, but unfortunately these are unavailable in my country.

So, there you have it. Seven strings rule!

Cheers!

EDIT : when will I learn to type?

I've got a 7-string but I've never been able to get anywhere with it. It's an Ibanez Universe Uv7Bk. I keep it tuned to A and it's fun to have a go at now and then just for the really deep growl but I've never figured out how to play chords on it so it's limited what I can play.
I'll probably chuck it on Ebay when I run out of space

ya i think 7-strings were more of a "nu-metal" fad and thats why all the string gauges are weird. it allows nu-metallers to tune down to drop Q tuning

although Rusty Cooley can shred like no other and he usually uses a 7 string i beleive.

I don't use a seven string but i've got my normal 6 stringer strung up that way. i took off the high e string and shifted the rest down a notch and added a low B. because of that the tensions are a little messed up at the bridge, but hey, it works for me!
if your playing lots of gutsy bar chords you definitly want your low b string to be in the mid 60's as far as the gauge is concerned. 60 would be the minimum.
i also drop the tuning 2 steps aswell so its A-E-A-D-G-B.

I did that with my six string until I bought a 7. And yes, .60 would be minimum.

Actually, it's vice versa. Detuning the strings make them floppy and harder to play. As fas as I am concerned BEADGbe and AEADGbe do the trick.

I'm not really sure how old it is. The only serial number is on the neck plate and it's 000063. It's got the original Edge instead of lo-pro Edge so it's probably one of the earlier versions.

According to www.jemsite.com uv7bk was in production from 1990 to 1994.

It seems that lopro tremolos were introduced in 1991.

So, there you go.

Its not made by Ibanez, but I am intruiged by Matt Pike's (from High On Fire) 9 string guitar. Its basically a six string, but the 3 high strings are doubled like on a 12 string, or basically its a 12 string with the octave strings for the wound strings taken off...

My son wants a 7-string & we saw a great deal down at Music6000.. Schecter Omen 7 for $250 which was about $130 off retail. It had been there a while but I didn't see a scratch on her. I'm stupid for not grabbing that puppy but we were buying too many amps at that time & already have 8 guitars in the house. Still, its a great guitar especially at that price.
