Just a more recent update of what I've been listening to:
Cream - Wheels of Fire (This album is good, but not Cream's best, I do love White Room to death though, and that makes up for some of the other songs that aren't so good, most of them are really just missing Clapton's creative input, I know he didn't even play guitar on a good amount of the songs, because at that point Jack Bruce and Felix Pappalardi had pretty much taken over the studio.) The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday (This album is great, it took me a tiny bit to get into it and how the singer doesnt really sing, but I love some of the lyrics, and the general slummy druggy subject matter) Blind Faith - S/T (In general I never really liked Blind Faith, but I'm giving it another shot, I'm not sure why I didnt like it, I think it's just because its not nearly as rockin as Cream) John Mayall - Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton (This album is great, although I could do without some of the instrumental stuff sometimes, and some of Mayall's bullshit lyrics) Derek & the Dominos - Live at the Fillmore (I never really liked a lot of the Derek & the Dominos material, I dont know if I'm going to be able to convince myself to like it either. Lots of it is just way too mellow for me) Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time (A co-worker gave me his copy of this to listen to, I like it alright, it kind of fades into the background at work though, I need to go home and crank it up) Modest Mouse - The Fruit that Ate Itself (This is pretty good although for an EP there are quite a few throwaway tracks where Brock is just screwing around with a reverse delay effect for a while) Cake - Motorcade of Generosity (wow, this album is surprisingly good, especially the song "Jolene", they had a different guitarist for this album and the next one "Fashion Nugget" than they do now, its nice and funky at times) Smashing Pumpkins - Gish (I've been trying to really get myself into the Pumpkins for a while now, I like the singles well enough, but I just cant seem to get too far past that. It seems like all the other songs on a pumpkins album are just Corgan screwing around with longer instrumental parts, or being way too sensitive and soft-spoken) Cursive - Happy Hollow (Man does this album suck, I'm gonna keep listening and try to give it a chance though, some review I read called it "Adult Emo") The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine (I love The Thermals, if you like the Mountain Goats, you'd love the Thermals too, their first album was recorded for $60 and mostly sounds awful although "No Culture Icons" is amazing, and their second album is alright, but the song writing is not nearly as good as this album. I'm not a huge fan of all the religious allusions and bible story-style lyrics, but man do I love the music and the melodies.)
As you can tell I'm on quite the Clapton binge right now, not sure exactly why that is, I'd like to think its more of a blues binge in general, but it's probably not.
Thanks for reading.

Captain Beefheart - Doc at the Radar Station - includes my personal favorites "Best Batch Yet" and "Brickbats".
Another classic "Big Eyed Beans from Venus" from the album Clear Spot. |

There is a lot of very good rock musician in Mexico and the entire Latin America. I'd specially like to recommend you "La Barranca", you can see information about this band at
http://www.labarranca.com.mx/
The vocal/lead guitar, Jose Manuel Aguilera is a excelent guitar player, no need to say that he is my favorite guitar player. They play rock music and he has very interesting style. Santana is very good, but for me, Aguilera is better. And one thing that I appreciate a lot is that he is always seeking for different sounds using effects. Sometimes he imitates a whale call in a song, for example. He also introduces the electric guitar in danzon style songs and he does it very well. He has been recruited once for a world beat band with a german, a cuban and a u.s. person. The band was Nine Rain. |
