I need to re-do some wire connections(due to bad solders connections from a previous owner who messed with it)inside my old ''Made In Italy by JEN'' crybaby WAH.
Can I replace ALL of the wires with a bigger gauge.The original wires looks pretty thin to me.Will this change the overall sound of the pedal.
The board with red FASEL inductor is original and untouched.
Is it OK to replace all of the wires leading from the board to the on/off (marquardt) switch and to the input/output jacks at once with beeffier wires?
I am pretty good with a soldering iron but I am zero in electronics.
The wah pot is marked 1347540 (134 = Centralab from 40th week of 1975?!)but the pedal looks older than that.
My guess is that the pot was replaced at some point before I bought it.
I know this has nothing to do with Boss but I want to stick with this forum because I am sure there is an expert out there in the crowd that can help me.

Please take an overall shot of the internals,
so I can get a better idea of what you are trying to rewire-repair.
Or what specific pictures do you need?
Which wires are broken off.
I have a JEN era Red Fasel Crybaby (identical internals), I could upload a pic or two.
Yes they were all made with very thin looking wires.

I'd endorse what Dr. Bob says
- I've got an original Jen too and the wires really are thin.
I wondered the same thing as you but a knowledgable guy who services my guitars,
amps and stuff said changing the wire gauge / quality wouldn't make any difference.
I decided not to do it and I'd be really interested to know how it turns out if you do it.
BTW Dr. Bob - not being an electronics wiz -
what are those white square shaped components -
are they covers for something? Just curious - thanks & regards.

Those white things are:
Un-polarized 0.22uf (microfarad) polyester capacitors.
Just ordinary green caps in a nice rectangular package, and 250 Volt.
a bit of an overkill in a 9V pedal - but.
They used whatever parts they could get at the time, & what the bean counters said they could spend.
I had to add some "returns" to your post, it was very wide because of it wouldn't word wrap,
because of the super sized pic in the previous post.

You don't need beefier wires to help, you can use 24-26 gauge wire.
If there is enough slack, you can resolder them. Make a small hook and solder them to the post. |
