Have a look at the following page
http://www.surplussales.com/Switches/SWRoMisc-3.html

The text for the first switch on this page says
"Momentary" - "Off" - "Momentary". What does that mean?
I'm looking for a 2 pole, 3 position switch that I can use for my VB-2 project. Would this one work?

Momentary means it won't lock left and right. How about something like this:

http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Switches/Rotary-Switches/PCB-Mounting-rotary-switches/30305/kw/rotary%20switch

The 2 pole - 6 way lets you restrict the number of ways. It's very cheap too.

You could buy from Maplin too.

It means the switch will spring-return to the center position when you let go. Like the "start" position on a car's ignition key. Probably not what you want.

Or something that you can mount on the enclosure:

http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Switches/Toggle-Switches/Miniature-toggle-switches/75284/kw/toggle%20switch

Item: DPDT ON-OFF-ON MIN TOGGLE SWITCH RC 75-0088

This one will lock left and right while it is off in the center position.

You would need a DPDT on-off-on switch for the VB2 looking at the Boss schems.
Why does it have a Bypass option? Never understood that feature
If you use a DPDT on-on and wire it the same, you lose the bypass but keep the other two latch/unlatch features.

I suppose that it works like a normal On - Off - On switch with 2 x 2 pins for the signal coming in and 2 x 1 for the signal going out. In the 'Off' position, nothing connects. The switch will return in its 'Off' position if you do not hold it. I suppose that that isn't the switch you are looking for.

It looks like this, but with an extra 'in between' position: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:DPDT-symbol.svg

Thanks for the replies.

My plan is to mount everything into a gutted BF-2 that I got lying around. That means the larger rotary switches won't fit and I don't fancy using a toggle switch.

I actually ordered a replacement switch from Roland. They don't have parts for discontinued pedals but the FZ-5 has a 3 position switch so I asked for that instead. Turned out it was a 1-pole switch so I can't use it. Doh!

Christo brings up a good point about the bypass feature. If I drop that I could use the 2 position switch from a wrecked CE-3 that I've got. I'm already using that for a lot of the other parts that I need.

I might also e-mail mouser and ask if they can get me one that's closer to the original. They got 4-position Alps switches that looks exactly right so if I ask for a 3 position they may be able to order in some.

Hi BossArea! It's more positions than you want, but the switch off a DD-3 is multi-pole.

So... I'm looking at the schem for the VB-2 and if you don't care about the bypass option, it looks like you don't actually need double-pole.... a simple SPDT toggle switch will do the job
