| Anyone else with a CS-3 who can add data? We have a 5 year period where the change happened (May 1990 to Sep 1995) that we can probably narrow down... |

Hi Laurie Was mine in your original old list? I seem to remember a thread a long time back, along similar lines, or we were thinking out loud about this issue.

Just to chuck a spanner in the works: there has been more than one THAT chip in use.
I see there's one mentioned above with a 2159. Mine has a 2181.
CS-3 details:
HX04548 (MIJ, May 2008, PSA) THAT 2181LC Two of the op-amps are NJM4558LD, the other I can't make out from my photo (NJM340-something, it's hidden. I can update this info later if need be).

Just returned from Mallorca holiday, so I'm a little bit late on this topic: My oldest CS-3 for now is a Feb 1991 one, serial EC33957, MIT black label, and has the dBx chip. And compared to my newer ones (1997 + 2000, both with the THAT chip), the dBX one truly wins the race: a more lush and quite more musical sound, I believe. The newer ones are just a bit sterile. |

Hmmm... does it look like its been repaired?
Perhaps they changed versions because the old 2159 version was discontinued? |

Hi Laurie,
I have three CS-3 's:
-one MIJ serial#628500 (Jan 86) and dbx chip of course - By far the best CS-3 I have ever played
-one MIT serial#DB90927 (Oct 90) with dbx chip and Monte ALLUMS mod - Very sweet
-one MIT serial#DC02827 (Nov 90) with dbx chip
Take care. |

The data so far... the change to THAT occured between Feb 1991 and Sept 1995.
If anyone has a CS-3 that was made in between those dates please let us know - it will narrow the gap some more. |

Now I can narrow the gap even more: I just won a CS-3 over eBay: MIT, ACA, black Label, serial GE00346, decodes to July 1992. And it has the dbx chip!
So the change occured between July 1992 and October 1992!
Makes it easier to hunt down a decent MIT CS-3 ;-) |

Well this puts the cat among the pigeons...for me anyway.... i use my CS-3 all the time and i find it a good compressor...the thing is i bought mine around 1995 after my effects rack was stolen out of the band i was in at the time while i was on hols... so according to the way things are being narrowed down it must be a THAT chip...but i STILL think it's a good compressor especially for country style chickin' pickin'....i will get the serial number out of it later at rehearsal and see what year it is..i bought it new so unless it was NOS it's looking like a THAT chip... |

Nope, bought it brand new last year. I'm not sure if the 2159 was discontinued, but currently Farnell list only the 2180 and 2181 of THAT's VCAs. |

| The THAT2159 was part of the THAT2150 series that are now obsolete, but THAT corporation still offer spares for the 2159. The THAT2181CL is the replacement part, pin for pin compatible part. Has better noise performance and THD specs. Farnell in the UK stock them, Mouser in the USA. |
