Hi all....on the suggestion of Dr Bob i thought i would get the ball rolling to see is there any other fans of vinyl on the forum....some of my favourite albums are still on vinyl so i might see if my family might want to get me one of the new turntables with the USB connection so i can load them onto the computer for safety... i have a couple of old Decca Django recordings that i'm especially wary of..also a lot of Jeff Becks stuff as well 'Blow by Blow,Wired etc.....but there is something about loading a 33 onto the turntable and watching the needle drop.............

i'm soso on big black. not my favorite band by any means, but i do find them interesting and entertaining. i find i'm in a mood for shellac more often than big black.

:) i'm just messin around, i know you were talkin about records but i do have a couple of discs from big black :)

i have a lot of records but only really listen to it when the CD version has a godawful mastering job or stuff that's only available on vinyl. i've done just straight up recordings through my sound card's input jack of vinyl. funny thing is, a CD burned from a recording of a record generally sounds better than the mastered CD even if you just burn it in ez cd creator or something.

a handful of my records are valuable/rare to the point where i've only played them once... which was long enough to record em to a cassette or CD.

the funny thing is that steve albini (formerly of big black)'s newer band (shellac) had an album released that was $14.95 MSRP on vinyl or on CD... but inside the record jacket was the CD as well... so if you bought the record you got the cd for free too.

i know a few bands that have the label "this was meant to be listened to on vinyl" on their cd liners.

I've retired all my albums but I don't want to get rid of them. There's too many memories connected to them and there's also a few albums I haven't got on any other media.

I though this was a thread about Big Black, until I read your response. One of my favorite CDs is Steve Albini playing with Zeni Geva.

The ' big black ' in the title is what my kids call my albums.."daddys big black cd's"...i also love vinyl for the sleeves, some of Thin Lizzys 70's stuff had artwork by a famous irish artist called Jim Fitzpatrick who is probably most famous for the iconic Che Guvara image....his celtic artwork especially on the ' johnny the fox' album was class........the Weather Report stuff i have,as well as being musically excellent, also have some brillant sleeve artwork...'black market' probably deserves to be framed and on the wall.....

I have a huge collection of LPs, I play them more than my CDs. I like the sound from vinyl a lot more than I like the digital not-so-warm-sounding CDs.
I still buy used vinyl, cheap for the most parts.

My experience with big black CD's isn't too extensive, but thankfully my old man has got a decent stereo system. Not awesome but decent, i like pulling out his old Floyd records and having a listen, strangely though the album I noticed the most change in from CD to Vinyl is Milo Goes To College by Descendents, it's so much clearer on vinyl. But some of their later stuff the change isn't so noticeable...

Vinyl....

It's the muts nuts.

Started listening to music in the 70's/early 80's
I still have 1000+ albums on all on shelves in the lounge!

What you play them on makes a biiiig difference.
Any CD player will wipe the floor with a cheap 100 turntable.

I ttok the plunge years ago and got a decent turnable.
Never regretted it, neither has my wife.

In case you're wondering, my system is...
Linn LP12 turntable + Akito arm + Lingo power supply
Marantz PM17 amplifier
Castle Conway speakers
Speaker & Interconnect cables are by Van Den Hul
Mains cords & multi blocks by Russ Andrews

Not easy to find vinyl cheap nowadays, people know their prices.
Been to the fleamarket this sunday, prices vary between 6 and 14 euros Do you think I can find vinyl cheaper in Sweden ?

10 years ago I was kind of lucky, saw an advert : 100 hard-rock albums for 100 guilders (55 euros). Called the guy immediately, he lived 15 km from my house, borrowed a car from a friend and picked up the albums. It was a nice collection in great condition : 'van halen' 'uriah heep' 'foreigner' 'rush' 'scorpions' 'iron butterfly ( or: Oin Botterfloi as the Aussies here would pronounce it(worked with one )

Yeah, its very important to use a descent turntable, I dont have a Linn but a Rega and Copland pre and power amps (all tubes) and good Snell speakers.

I pulled a whole pioneer system(seperates) out of a skip last year with nothing wrong with it except for a new needle needed, probably not the best system in the world but decent enough to get back into vinyl.... thats what got me back revisiting my vinyls....when i went back to the places i used to go when i was younger a lot were gone.... i got a lot of good stuff years ago when the government closed the pirate radio stations, and when i was in construction i pulled about 50 LP's out of a skip when we were renovating a hotel... when i asked why they were being dumped i was told they had got a new digital system and they were not allowed to give the LP's to staff members because of "insurance reasons".... your gonna cut yourself on the edge of a 33.....yeah right...although if one of the LP's was by Leonard Cohen...............

I'm in between SP-1 and Goran....i find in the car boot sales and flea markets prices have gone up but is you look hard enough there are still bargains to be got.....

Stupidest thing that happened to me vinyl wise :

16 years ago I went to a secondhand recordstore. I knew they got a lot of rock and metal, prices between 5 and 10 euros (10 and 20 guilders back then).
Lot of great albums but choose four and went to the counter to pay:'we're selling out so every album is 2 euros' said the guy.
'Okay' I said and paid 8 euros.

Days or weeks later I realized something 'why didn't I buy the whole f****g collection for 2 euros a piece, why.........why....

I've been back but either eveything was sold or the store closed I don't recall.
And yes I'm crying while writing this .....
