I have bought a tele in parts for about US $120 from a company here in Sweden. http://gitarrdelar.se/popup_image.php?pID=1862 As you can see the head has to be shaped, a lot of sanding and I plan to oil both the body and neck with a yellow oil I will get from a friend. Over this I will use furniture wax to polish up a nearly lacquered feeling. For the low amount of money all the electronic parts are of course of sub-quality. But I have lots of pots and switches at home so it will not cost me anything. I have ordered a pair of GFS Lil Punchers pickups, they look like Joe Barden’s but are a bit hotter. I will keep you updated with pictures as the work progress. Oh, by the way, I don´t do this to get a cheap tele, I do it for fun

Nice one....looking foward to seeing this build...any chance of some pics as you go....?... i put the a seymour duncan hot rails and a vintage stack i had in the house, back into my squier japan silver series tele the other day..after spending so much lately i couldn't really justify spending more on new pickups and the squiers back pickup was busted(the neck pickup was never any good sounding really)the reason i took the SD's out was they were muddy sounding on clean sounds before.... but since then i've found out a lot, especially on this forum... i put some 1 meg pots in with a mod i got from Rich S to turn the tone pot into a blend pot for the hot rails to go from single to humbucker mode...i still wasn't happy with the neck pickup so i added a mini toggle switch to turn one of the coils off for a slightly brighter sound when playing clean....so far it sounds pretty good at low volumes but i'm going rehearsing later so we will see how it pans out...Goran if you GFS pickups have the ability to be split it might be something to consider.... |

Great project. Very reasonable price and you'll have lots of fun.
A few years back I put together a tele made by Brian at http://www.projectguitar.com . He made the parts and sold them as a kit. My plan was to put the Ikea logo on the headstock but I sold it before I got that far. |

Neck is maple with rosewood board, body basswood. Basswood is soft, easy to sand but also easy to get dings on. |

Teles look good with a few dings..... ask keef richards... ... i tried the squier tele tonight ..worked great except i used a 1meg pot for the split pot on the hot rails and when it's in single coil mode the volume is too low compared to the neck pickup,i wonder is it because i used too large a value pot for this...? the 1 meg volume pot really brightened up the SD's and gave them a bit of zing.....i might just wire the hot rails to the mini toggle and have both the the same (single or humbucking) and re-wire the tone pot as normal....this modding lark in non stop thinking..... .... |

Now I´m finished with sanding, shaping headstock, oiling and waxing. I quite satisfied with the outcome. Those damn pickups has not arrived yet

Hi Goran I'm really glad I convinced you to do a story on your Telecaster build.
Goran was telling me about his new Telecaster project in one of our PM's last week, when I asked him to do a write up.
Thanks from all of us, & regards Dr. Bob |
