Hi all

Just bought a dead BF-2 which I brought back to life by changing the D1 diode. Before that it was completly dead - now it works again but theres a vey annoying swooshing sound in the background - could it be because og the diode not being the same type as those others in the BF-2?? Or should I look a completly different place for a reason for the noise??

Cheers

Hi Vim Fuego
Was the diode shorted or open, or did it just fall in half?
If the diode was shorted then its a good chance that it still protected the pedal.
But if it went open, then the reversed voltage & maybe it was a higher voltage as well, may have damaged something else, as you suspect.

let me know what you actually found,
I will go take a look at the schematic,
Do you mean the D10 protection diode, that's what it's labeled on ,my old schematic.
In series with R64 a 56 ohm resistor.
Check the output of IC6 its a 78L05 mini 5V regulator.
Is it around 5V DC.
I've had a few of these go.

Do you know how the BF-2 was blown up in the first place, I'm guessing over volts & reverse polarity.
If its rev. polarity them you will have to start looking at the opamps.
IC 1 & 2 are 4558 & IC5 is a TL022
Read my thread on repairing the Ibanez DL5 dig delay.
The rev polarity took out all the opamps. I used a 4558 for the TL022 in the oscillator circuit. the pedal now woks fine.

Hope I was of some help
Do you need the schematic, let me know.
Also what did you use to replace the diode?

Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Dr. Bob - thanx for taking the time to reply to this. Great input.

Im not sure what type the diode I used as a replacment was - just the one I had lying around - but it was smaller than the original.. I think the original was opened as I could measure it both ways. Im quite sure it sais D1 on the board - Ill have to look when I get back home.

Cheers

Hi Vim Fuego

The D1 diode on the schematic is a protection diode.
if you were able to measure it both ways, does that mean, the reading you got, was 0 both ways or was it .6 both ways?

I am assuming that you had your meter on the diode test setting & not the resistance settings.

Can you confirm your readings - settings & findings, for me?

Please tell me the number of the diode that you replaced it with.
For protection diodes, you can use any of the 1N4001 1N4002 1N4004 1N4007 diodes these are all 1 Amp type diodes,
I use 1N4007's as I have quite a few in my stock.

As I stated in my previous post, you may have damaged OpAmp IC's
this is most likely, if the diode went completely open circuit.
That is why you will have to confirm & explain what you meant by,
"you could read it both ways".

I recently was given one by a friend at work, it lived under his house for the past 20 years or so, it still had the original battery in it (well what was left of it).
I cleaned up fine & works very well, I will have to replace the pedal switch, it sometimes goes intermittent.

I was really taken back by how nice this pedal can sound.

Good luck with the repairs.
You won't be disappointed when you get it going.
