Hi
I have an old od-1,( serial 7500 ) the chip is CA324E. Did boss ever use this chip or has it been replaced.

Hi michelr, On the early silver solder boards you should be able to detect a repair or replacement. Look for excess solder and rosin. I've seen a few of the raytheon equipped pedals with replaced op amps. Hope that helps!

Hi mitchelr

As far as I'm aware Bos did use the 324 & the LM747 quad op-amps
in the OD-1 at some point.
But we might have to wait until Borssarea - Admin chimes in as well.

Any chance you might upload some pictures of both sides of the board?

Regards Dr. Bob

Hi mitchelr
Ok I'm going to be brutally honest here.
So please don't get upset at us.

In the PCB tracks side picture, it looks like it's been been reworked or repaired.

Same goes for the Component side picture, the solder joints that connect to the PCB look like they have been resoldered - reworked.

The soldering is a little on the rough side but will still work.

Some of the solder on the IC pins, have (pin holes) in the solder.
The board looks a little overheated as well.
they probably used large soldering iron, or the temp was set a bit high.
A lot of the wires seem to have been resoldered to the topside pads on the PCB
A few are very rough- some are Ok

But as I said, if it's working now, then it sould still work 5-10 tears from now.
depending on how hard it's treated.

If it was sold to you as an original unmodified vintage pedal.
well I'm sorry to say that not the real truth.

If you are happy wit the sound of it, I would ;leave it alone.
If you are skilled in soldering & desoldering, or have a good friend that you can trust.
Then I would spend a few minutes tidying up the soldering & the Wires.

Else leave well alone.
An OD-1 is still an OD-1, you might want to chase down an 3404 quad opamp chip to make it more original.
But I know people that love the tone of the other quad opamps as well.

I would still consider yourself lucky to get such a clean 14 pin OD-1
I would not go selling it off on evilbay or the other list.
All the other components look original.
so for a few $$ & some time it would be a 3404 version of the 14 pin OD-1

I belive the prefix for the 3404 is CA3404, I don';t have a 14 pin version, but there are a few pics floating around in our pedal internals thread.

Apologies for being brutally honest.

Regards Dr. Bob

Thanks Dr Bob
I did some computer work for a friend a few years ago and I wouldn't take any money so he gave me the pedal.
I was going to get rid of it ( that's why I was wondering if it was the original chip)
Thanks again

Dr. Bob makes a great point about originality and value. But at some point the electrolitic caps are going to have to be replaced on all our vintage gear if we want to continue enjoying them. They have a shelf life and while the pedal won't be original, I'll take it over a nonfuntioning one anyday! It's the first step in making a vintage radio reliable and safe for the rest of the circuitry!

Hi mitchelr
Apologies for being forward.

If you are serious about possibly selling it off.
I would be be keen to restore it back to it's former glory.

I have a 3404, I have been keeping for just such a possibility.

Please PM me, & let me know if you would be willing to send it to
Australia, or perhaps to Laurie in Canada.
Or possibly one of the UK members here, if I could impose on one of them to them forward it to Oz.

Unless you are now keen to restore it yourself, or keep it?

Regards Dr. Bob

Hi voxmanjohn

As Moderator, I occasionally have to inform new members to,
please be aware that we have some simple guidelines for the:
Buy & Sell threads.

Guidelines for the buy/sell forum:
http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=76

It's mainly the 10 post minimum rule, that I have to ask you to respect.

We are a pretty reasonable bunch of guys & girls over here.
So I'll leave your post as it is.
But please understand that the final decision rests with Bossarea - ADMIN.

Occasionally we have people that just join up to sell their pedals/gear, & then we never hear from them again.

Including some commercial vendors, who think they can treat the forum
as another sales venue.

Thanks for understanding.
