Hey all, first off I hope everyone's summer is going alright. We finally have the sun out daily up here in Vancouver and it feels good getting back into shorts and flip flops to relax.
Back to the topic at hand - as I've been acquiring more pedals recently (Boss is my go-to pedal manufacturer) and trying to refine my signal chain, I've been experimenting left and right with running concurrent pedals. I've been especially interested in how many Boss pedals (keeping in mind FET and non-TB) it takes to degrade the original signal and result in tone loss.
My question is this, how many Boss pedals would you run concurrently before you draw the line to preserve your original signal? I know that it's not only the # of pedals that matter but also the variety of pedals themselves, so if you could offer some knowledge on that part it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, and I hope to get some replies as this is something I'm extremely interested in for the moment.

G'day! The most pedals I have in a loop at any given time is about 6. I haven't tried it with more, but at 6 I can't hear any degradation.

Interesting, got some pretty different responses so far. Mostly on the conservative side though. Mesjoggah I'd really like to see a picture of your Boss setup if you don't mind! 20 pedals in your chain? Haha wow! I'm running around 14 right now and I get this feeling it's a bit much lol. |

I run 5 or 6 pedals together .. (limited by the space on my board)
I need a crybaby and a TU-2.. but I have a hard time on the rest.
Lately it has been a BD-2, a PH-1r and a DD-3 - sometimes a GE-7.
I would love to have bigger board.. but I think the max would be around 10 - 12 pedals.. and then learn how to tap dance..
Cheers |

I take it you mean only Boss?
I run 4 Boss, but along with other pedals. |

Hi pedals 4 pv
Nice setup
What is the Wah like pedal on the bottom left of the pic, next to the RV-x?
And the blue box, next to the V-Wah?
Regards Dr. Bob |

I've found that with older pedals I have to limit myself to about 6 pedals. The newer pedals are more silent and I think the switching is better too so I can run about twice as many before I hear any notable signal degradation. I still try to limit myself to a BCB-60 though. Anything more than that and I start tripping over the cables. |

Hi Dr. Bob, thanks for the compliment. It's thanks to Bossarea forum that it has become a nice set up, this site has helped a great deal. The Wah like pedal is a Schaller F121 volume control and the blue one is a generic sustain pedal that I use for Tap-Tempo on the DD-5. the RV-x is a RV-3. The RV-3, the chorus, the DD-3 and the volume pedal are in the amp effects loop. The Tremolo, Phaser and Flanger are in the send-return loop of the NS-2. The others are ahead of the NS-2. The PSM-5 bypasses direct to the TU-2. The AB/Ys control the stereo outputs to the second amp, which is in a master/slave arrangement, with the signal coming from the effects loop of the main amp through the stereo pedals. This way I get the tube amp's sound and response through the solidstate secondary amp. I have recently acquired a LS-2 and a FS-6 so some changes are on the horizon, but I am always changing it around a bit. I took an idea from Goran and will change a distortion, an overdrive, or a chorus just about every day. It gives me a little variety and keeps the capacitors in my older pedals in good order . |

| I've noticed a bit of degradation with six pedals in line, even with high quality cable. However, 4-5 seems to be a bit better. Typically I just put the three I need most on a BCB-30 and go minimalist. |

| I have a power strip with 6 outlets, one OneSpot can handle a 1700ma load, so my answer is 10200ma of pedals, or 2550 DS-1's. |

Nice setup pedals4pv....

This is my one...the top row are looped through the LS-2 i will have to update the photo as since i took this the the LS-2 is now where the CH-1 is and the is a CE-2 in front of it,also i've re-introduced the BF-2 to the top row in front of the TR-2... so basically my chain is ,Wah,CS-3,Twin Tube,CE-2,LS-2-Amp..... the LS-2 is useful to my setup as it stops me having to tap dance on a heap of pedals in the middle of a gig and keeps the others out of the way when not needed also you can use it to boost your signal in the loop a little bit to compensate if you want for the extra pedals......... |
