| I have a boss bf-3 and I like the rise and fall effect on it, but Its goes a bit crazy and I find pretty useless at times. Would a phaser be better? Ph-3 any good? |

| Ph-3 is a good pedal. Ph-1 or Ph-1R is better... |

I have a PH-2 ..it's a bit whacky compared to say a MXR phase 90 but it's not the worst either....i don't use it much but a couple of people want us to start doing the DSOTM era floyd stuff we used to do so you never know it might make a comeback...... ... |

| The PH-3 gives you quite a wide range of choices for phase effects; my favorite sound is the 4 stage. I owned 3 PH-3s and they all had a pronounced volume drop using the 4 stage setting. I don't know why this is but its possible that it cuts a lot of midrange out and some of my sounds, have midrange already cut out, so I can't say for sure. The PH-1 and the 1r are both 4 stage phasers and I did NOT have the same problem with the 1r as with the 3. The PH-2 does NOT have the 4 stage sound on it, and the PH-2 seems to work really well for a kind of 'auto-wha' but different funk sound. PH-3s are very easy to come by so for not a lot of money and ease, the 3 would be a good place to start. |

I don´t find the PH-2 as useful as my newly bought PH-1. The PH-2 is a little hard in the sound for me, the older one is moore smooth and warm, and, I think that it might have a little volymeboost when in use, such as the CE-2. But maybe thats just mine. I wote for a used old PH-1. |

I agree on the PH-2, mode II is particularly harsh, but has its place in the spectrum of guitar effects.
Again, I have to find a PH-1! |

I like PH-1R the best sound wise, but I also like PH-3 a lot. The latter can do a lot of different sounds that I like. As mentioned PH-2 is a little hard sounding and the “worst” of the Boss phasers. PH-1 is also a good vintage type of phaser, so there is something to all of them except PH-2.

i had the same problem, i couldn't stand it, i love the sounds the ph-3 produces on the other settings, but i needed the basic 4 stage sound so i got a used ph-1 on ebay...probably my favourite pedal i own |

I have a PH-3 coming in the mail.
Any recommended settings to try out? What modes are best? |

I have had 4 Boss phasers (PH-1r, PH-2 (MIJ and MIT), and PH-3), but now only have the PH-1r and MIJ PH-2. I really wanted to like the PH-3, but ultimately could not (the phaser settings were too "sterile"-sounding), and sold it on evilbay.
(and FWIW, same thing with the BF-3.) |

i have the PH-3 and the PH-1r and i find the PH-1r is heads and shoulders above the PH-3. to my ears the PH-3 is much more digital sounding. The PH-1r is choc full of warm and analogy sounds.
only issue i have with it is that it noticebly boosts the signal and the bass response off it can be a bit overwhelming. i'd love an effect level on the pedal to turn it down a small bit, just enough to let the guitar sound 'breath' if you know what i mean.
still my favorite pedal tho!! |
