I have a Cry Baby wah pedal that I have a slight problem with. The foot pedal falls down to minimum as soon as I take my foot off the pedal, its too loose. I would like the pedal to stay where I left it, to use it as a SP-1 type of devise (not always but as an option). How do I adjust the stiffness of the pedal the best way?? I will not push the rack gearing harder against the gearwheel as this could harm the pot.

Hi Goran
This is a common fault on the cry baby.
Under the treadle, you will see a long flat metal strap. This is the tension band, it goes over the rounded metal bar that is the pivot for the upper treadle.
Inside the cry baby you will see a bolt with a nut on it. (near the battery end) This holds the tension band to the base, on the other end is usually just a self tapping screw.
Just try to tighten this bolt & nut. This usually fixed the problem.
Sometimes you might have to flip the entire band over. If the band has really stretched too much, you might have to, either drill a new hole in the band, or make something similar.
I think Jim Dunlop sell these as a spare part, but it's just a flat metal strap.
Good luck with the fix. Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Goran
No problems, it took me a while to figure it out, the first time.
you can also carefully remove the bolt, and on the top end, near the head add a couple of progressively larger outside diameter washers.
Bolt-small-medium-larger washer - then bolt thru the band & base.
or maybe just a one or two washers, make sure that the internal diameter of the washer is the same size as the bolt & not heaps larger. which would allow the washer to move too much.
This will increase the area, that is pulled down by the bolt, when you re-tension it.
It's sort of like drilling another hole close to the existing one. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

I hope youve slept relatively well, Dr Bob!
With the solutions above I got the treadle a bit stiffer, but I want to have a bit more. I think that I have to remove the treadle, is this done by knocking out the stick (that holds the treadle to the pedal-bottom) with a nail and a hammer?
Here is a nice site with wah-information by the way: http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm
A little bit complicated but a lot of useful information.

Hi Goran
I haven't removed the hinge pin on a Cry Baby yet.
You might have to figure it our for yourself. From what I can see, it looks like you method will work. Just work slowly & "look twice".

Hi Goran I'll be standing behind you in spirit...
You might have to use a flat end - nail type punch. rather that a pointed nail, it will tend to slip too easily.

hi goran and dr bob,
just picking up on this thread, my cry baby seems to have a erm, kinda of dead area when i rock the foot pedal, its towards the bassier end of the sweep, id say there is a quarter of a sweep at the bass end where nothing happens. is this common, or any ideas as to how to chnge this? |

Hi happyplucker
You might try adjusting the pot. First mark where your pot starts or stops, as a reference.
Loosen the (P) clamp & back it off a little till the pot shaft & round gear can move freely.
Rotate the shaft & gear, back of forward a little at a time. Re adjust & tighten the (P) clamp & try it out. repeat until you get the desired effect.
There is a simple procedure on t the Jim Dunlop web site, about replacing & readjusting the pot.
Main FAQ Cry Baby page: http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=support/faq
How to replace a Hotpotz: http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=support/faq_gcb_howreplace Do step 7 to step 12
===extracted=== How do I replace the potentiometer?
The instructions for replacing the potentiometer are as follows:
1. Remove the bottom plate of the pedal. 2. Loosen screw holding the cable clamp. 3. Rotate cable clamp and disengage rack from gear. 4. Remove wires for the old pot. 5. Connect wires to ECB24B as shown. NO PHOTO 6. Remove old pot with " open-end wrench. 7. Depress toe of pedal to make contact with switch. 8. Rotate new pot gear counter clockwise to stop. 9. Install new pot in cradle and tighten. 10. Engage rack gear to pot gear, back off one tooth from stop. 11. Rotate cable clamp into rack holding position. 12. Tighten screw. 13. Replace bottom plate. ===End Extract===
Did you get the pot replaced at some time? It's common for unskilled repairers to not correctly adjust the pot, after replacing it.
I have done so many, that were badly or never adjusted, that I've lost count...
Good luck, I hope this all helps.
Regards Dr. Bob |
