| Just got a myself a bass recently - thought it would help with my learning of the guitar, and it gives me more of a chance to play...what sorts of effects should I consider for bass? |

I'm not really a bass player but I'm helpless without my limiter. Out of the different Boss offerings (LM-2, LM-2B, LMB-3), I've come to prefer the LM-2B. Without it my playing sucks big time. |

for a good dry sound : CS-3
for changing sound without changing bass : GE-7B
for distortion : FZ-2 or ODB-3
for weird sounds : SYB-3 or 5 or PH-3

I play Bass and it is so much better if you buy guitar effects for your bass
For Bottom Boost try a CS-3
For Distortion I would Suggest a MD-2 or a DS-1
For Fuzz a FZ-2 and a Big Muff (sovtek) would get you to that cliff burton sound
Morley is the best for Bass Wahs because they have so much range I would suggest either an old PWF or a PWB |

You can use normal guitar effects on a bass - you may find that you have to go for more of a trebly sound rather than a full bass tone, however. I've always used guitar distortions, chorus and flange on bass without any issues - but then I like a Peter Hook / JJ Burnel type tone, playing with a heavy pick.
Decent compression and / or limiter is essential. An old fashioned fuzz such as a Big Muff works well. Overdrive pedals without tone controls are also good for bass - I like the DOD 250 or the E-H Double Muff. I also like to run my bass through an HM-2, which has lots of low end to play around with, as well as loads of distortion.
A CE-5 or Bass Chorus (is it the CE-3B?) is good; try combining it with an octaver like the OC-2 for a really fat sound (this is also a classic way to get the 80's fretless bass sound, if that's your thing...)
I've also used delay on bass; this is one of the times when the high-end of a digital delay is better than an analog. I'd recommend the DD-3. |

| well i use a russian big muff, slap back echo and a cry baby bass wah. you can get some great sounds with mild fuzz and a wah. i think a compressor would be a great investment too. |

Thanks for the great input everyone - it's helped a lot!
Sounds like I can be well on my way with things from my guitar 'toybox': exodia - I've got an old Morley PWB...and ex,cal and tim - I guess I can use my 'ram's head' muff...I've got a DOD 'Milk Box' compressor I could try, and might be getting an EBS Multicomp...for distortion/ drives I've got a Marshall Guv'nor, SD-1 and DF-2...
How's that sound? |

Hi 4evrnewB
Apologies for the off topic.
What is the Dod Milkbox like? Is it the one with cows udder graphics or the newer one?
Please let me know if you consider selling it? It's one compressor I don't have yet.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Automatically my vote goes to the CS-3 as well, I had the LMB-3 but it hummed too much on a AC adaptor. The ODB-3 is a decent distortion, the DS-1 and SD-1 suck away too much low end to be usefull. The CE-2b is a nice chorus, same thing goes for the BF-2b being a nice flanger. My latest fave pedal is the GE-7b, because you can really scult your upper midrange with it, whereas the GEB-7 has a huge gap between the lower midrange and the treble frequencies. |

I'm also one of those pick / overmodulated bassists. I use guitar effects too. I just ramp up the lowend on my ME-X for whatever patches I use the SD-1 on. I personally do NOT like compression on my bass live because I feel it takes way too much away from the dynamics - maybe I just have the wrong setting, but I just unplug the compressor/limiter after a few seconds and shove it back where it came from again |

Any chance to show off my bass board!

the expression pedal on the left runs to the SYB5. I've not found a better chorus for bass than my CEB3,the HM2 i use for an extreme fuzz sound (which with the weeping demon gives me a great scream a la Cliff!), although I've been experimenting with a Tone Factor Fuzzsaw and EH Metal muff in that position.
The Hartke DI may be moving to be replaced with my MXR DI. |

I heard more bassplayers say that, but I tend to use compression as a tool to sculpt the sound so to say. I noticed that tube amps compress the signal a lot more than solid state amps giving that nice growl we all love, right? In fact, distortion is a form of compression, or the other way round: compression is just a form of clean distortion. Since I don't have a tube amp (yet) I just use a little amount of compression to basically simulate a tube amps behaviour. As well as squash too loud notes before they reach the speaker which is what it's designed to do in the first place
But it all depends on the compressor itself, I never had much luck with om-amp compressors with just one knob, I need an outboard unit to setup some of the parameters myself. I use the Boss RCL-10, and the CS-3 pedal myself.
btw, nice board Dudewheresmybass, what's that DOD pedal? |

Looks like a Meatbox.... one of those weird distortions that DOD used to love...
Are those Bass Synths any good? I've been thinking about getting either or both of those ones for a while now... |
