i have to admit that jack and redundant make valid points about fender having to involve the strummer estate in any use of his name...but do they really need the money...?? c'mon folks...the clash were if i remember correctly very big during the punk explosion in 1976/77 and also were the clash not one of the punk groups to go big in the states...i find it hard to believe that the strummer family could be that hard up for cash....i'm with goran on this subject with the zappa reference of only 'in it for the money'(it was also sad to see that zappa's son tried to cash in on a supposed strat that frank rescued after a hendrix gig where he was on the same bill as jimi)...if you look at the history of the hendrix estate and the infighting that has gone on over the years between different family members..but the punks like strummer i would like to believe stood for something above this 'grab as much as you can' philosophy....i have nothing per se against replicas or copies of famous instruments/effects etc....but frequently they are in my humble opinion overpriced and some of them are just not very good or any better than a normal strat/tele/les paul etc....in fact it was leo fender himself when asked if the older instruments and amps were better than some of the new stuff who said no.... i have read a lot of articles about the early days of fender and gibson and the gas thing is that a lot of the components were the cheapest they could source...!!! how they all must be laughing in the great guitar factory in the sky looking at us heading towards a $1,000,000 for a '59 les paul and a couple hundred grand for a '57 strat....which probably only cost a a fraction of that to build in the first place.....and when people go on about claptons les paul and marshall combo on the beano album what they are forgetting is that his les paul was only six or seven years old at the time and the amp even newer...!!! or can hendrix be ever pinned down to one particular guitar or amp...?? he went through so many.....i'm sorry but i can't agree with fender or gibson on this..whatever about producing a current artists guitar while he or she is still vertical..i.e page, clapton, johnson, beck etc...but to start cashing in on the dead...... ....... |

ya its definately hard to say. i think its a fine line but then again i find "pro model" guitars to be touchy as well.
do people actually buy pro model guitars because they like the player that much or is it more for the unique custom features? i mean besides the ones that appeal to little teen wannabes (Zakk Wylde LP or the Dimebag Deans.) people like Joe Strummer, Jimmie Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt arent really regarded as guitar heros in that way but they still have pro models.
im pretty sure the majority of guitarists actually frown on most pro models anyway (well the ones that scream pro models anyway. again Dimebag, Kerry King, etc). but when i see someone with a big metal Dimebag Dean i just think to myslef "be yourself man." one thing i found about Fender and Gibson is they usually tend to be tasteful with pro models and you usually cant tell except for a little signature on the headstock.
but again the horrible truth is some companies ARE in it for the money and are willing to cheapen their good name to make some dough.
oh and its not like Fender has "SRV" in huge letters on the SRV strat or anything.

I just found this hilarious since I play with a guy who has Washburn and Dean Dimebag guitars, Randall Amp, and Dimebag Wah, and who has been majorly jonesing to get a Les Paul, Marshall head, and every pedal on Zakk Wyldes pedalboard, "Just to see how he would sound through it." Or a Kerry King BC Rich, the expensive one, since he had the cheaper one for a few weeks last year and thought that was crap, so you'd think he'd learn a thing about signature gear. All I can do after putting up with this for a few years is laugh Because unless Dimebag or Zakk did it, he won't do it. |

In total agreement with the above comments - your guitar should be an expression of your personality. What does it say about you if you have to copy someone else? |

Some guys just have "it",and they sound good on anything. Look at Kurt Cobain and his Univox guitars. Me, I can make a carved maple top sound just like plywood. |
