I'm on a Paul Gilbert kick this week. One of the things I like about Gilbert is that he makes the most out of simple stuff. No huge rack - just some stompboxes he's had forever.

I just finished listening to the song "Hurry Up" on his CD Get Out of My Yard. It's a tribute to Rush (Hurry Up... Rush... get it?) His flanger of choice on the tune is an old BF-2. At the end of the song, he lets the chords ring out and fade away, and we're left with... BF-2 swooshy hiss. Same hiss I've had coming out of my rig for the last 25 years, whenever I forgot to turn off the flanger at the end of a song.

Sure it's noise, but it's somehow endearing.

BTW, if you want to experience some jaw-dropping, holy-crap, "he's a shredder but with taste", stunningly good guitar playing, check out Gilbert's Beatles tribute band Yellow Matter Custard playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2Xi8BHwGpg. I recently found it to be one of those performances that makes me want to either start over or give up.

I love Paul Gilbert and the stuff he did with Mr. Big.
Cool to see that they reunited

Paul also used a lot of different Boss pedals thoughout the years, a DD-3, TU-2, CS-3, DS-1, OS-2, GE-7, SYB-5, etc.

Lately he's using an Ibanez airplane flanger with some crazy liftoff mode on it, basically a reissue of an old ADA flanger.

I think he used an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress on that track, actually.

I'm starting to really like my BF-2 again.... the last time it was on my board i was using it with the CH-1...works a lot better with the CE-2 for a really thick sounding chorus with a bit of flange..just keep the Res control set low.......

I've seen Paul Gilbert a couple of times, last time I went to see him his tech let us all have a look at his gear and if I remember correctly i think Plexi1959, he used the deluxe electric mistress. He used it a lot that show in fact, he did an extended jam that was very flangey.

I tried out the new airplane flanger, it is unreal. Some settings had a vocal and dare i say 'talkbox' kind of vibe to it. I really want one.
