I have the chance to pull the trigger on an MIJ or an MIT BF-2 and I was wondering which would be the better choice?
I've done a search and read past MIJ/MIT BF-2 posts where the MIJ is "warmer" and the MIT is more "metallic" sounding and I was wondering if this is actually the case? I own a PH-2 that is very shrill sounding (metallic) and doesn't work with my amplifier/guitar setup, so the BF-2 is my second choice.
Also, I'd like to say hello. I'm a previous Boss user that was turned to Boss hatred by the geekchat forums (although, of my own choice, because they do have discerning tastes over there) and I'm now just coming back to Boss. Sounds like a AA meeting or something...
Anyway, hope you can help me out. Thanks. |

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don't think there is a difference but I haven't A-B'd the japanese against the Taiwanese version so I'm not 100% sure. I haven't heard about any schematic changes and rumours about changes usually travels fast. Some people say the Taiwan pedals are using cheaper components but I don't think this is true. It would only save a few cents per pedal but if everyone agreed the quality dropped, they could lose thousands.

Hmm, that seems to make sense. I'm pulling the trigger on the MIJ I think, seeing as it's available and supposing there's no real difference. I may adjust the trimpots anyway so I guess it doesn't matter as much as I may have originally thought.
Love the forums, by the way.
Thanks for the help! |

I've only seen one BF-2 schematic in my travels -- but could it be possible that at some point the circuit was revised for a newer BBD device or chipset, since this one was in production for a couple of decades? Might that account for the sound difference?
I have the Boss service manual for this pedal, by the way, in case anyone needs it. Also have the MIJ DS-1 service manual. I got them from Roland back in the early '90s sometime.
C.K.

| I have a silverscrew BF-2 and have compared it to a MIT 90s BF-2 several times, the old one is maybe a little tad less shrill. I say maybe so there is no big difference (and I have no golden ears as Eric Johnson), and remember your audience will for sure not hear any difference |

I recently purchased a MIJ BF-2 and I love it, it's very sweet for a Flanger. Don't have a MIT to compare it with so I can't comment on whether or not there's a difference.

Yep, I too have just bought a MIJ BF2 (an early black dial one) and I also love it! Has anyone ever seen the mythical pink one? I'm sure that if the MIT ones sucked relative to the MIJs we'd have heard the screaming by now! Still, if in doubt, buying the MIJ when you have a choice is probably sensible.
