As mentioned in another topic I traded a Fender Frontman 15W for the twin pedal OD-20. At first I thought most of the different od/dists sounded good, some very good. Giving it some more days I have been more and more impressed, and some of the modelled ods are just fantastic. One big advantage over the stock pedals is that you have extra knobs not on the originals; bottom, attack shape and octave. With those you can do a lot, really a lot.
Then I decided to compare all the modelled ones against the originals, after a while I thought this was not very meaningfull as there are so many possibilties in both the original and the modelled ones, much more in the latter.
But here are my finds: BD-2: the modelled one sounds a little less harsh but dont have the same dynamics that the original, very good moddelling anyway. OD-1: the modelled one sounds superior, much more possibilities to dial in a great tone. DS-1: the modelled one is not as good sounding as the original, the original has more dynamics. The modelled one is not bad by all means. MT-2: the modelled one sounds the way the original should, great! The harshness and icepick-in-the-ear is gone. Amazing for heavy distortion. HM-2: the original sounds better for sure, but the modelled sounds fine anyway. Tubescreamer 808: very good replication, I think I like this more than the original after adjusting a lot. Fulldrive 2: great sound, I have not the original. Klon Centaur: I have not ever tried the original, but the modelled one is just amazing, my favourite of all types in OD-20. The sparkle is just far out. If any Boss is near this one its SD-2 i crunch mode. All the fuzzes sounds very very good exept the Rockman fuzz, but Rockman sound the way it does in the Rockman earphone amp too.
There are more modelled od/dists, I havent tested them as deeply as the above. But my conclusion is that OD-20 is a very powerful and good sounding tool. And useful: four memory slots (plus one manual mode), the attach shape does miracles on many of the types, the octave is great for the more darker sounding heavy metal and the bottom control lets you dial in the bottom end deeply if you want. So OD-20 modells the originals very good, but you have much more possibilities, much more, to dial in something you really like. After this I has out Klon Centauer on my wants list! On OD-20 its a killer!

I've always wondered about this pedal. Thanks for giving us your observations. I guess Boss can model some great OD sounds after all. Great to know it can live up to its previous stompbox standards. |

Hi Goran & Guys
I believe that the Paul "Crowther Hot Cake" pedal, was based on the original Klon Centauer pedal.
The Crowther Hot Cake seems to have a become as Urban legend, and seems to have even become a bit mythical as well. Expensive though at $299Au.
Paul Crowther, was the drummer for the New Zealand band Split Enz.
Unfortunately, I have never played or used either.
