Just curious as to what amp/amps Bossarea forumites are using with their Boss pedals. Also, how do you have your clean channel set? Here's my info:
Amp: Peavey Prowler - 45 watts, all-tube, 2 6L6GCs x 3 12AX7s, 1x12 speaker. This is the little brother amp of the Peavey Ultra family, made in the USA in 1998. It has 2 channels with a gain and volume boost on the OD channel that make it like a 3 channel amp. Accutronics spring reverb. Effects loop, which I only use with a DD-6 pedal if using the OD channel. Resonance switch. The OD channel works best for metal and has an active EQ. The clean channel is excellent. Passive EQ and bright switch. My settings on the clean channel are Bass 5-7, Mid 3-4, Treble 5, Reverb 2.75, Volume 1-2. I also have a Peavey 112SX extension cabinet that my Prowler sits on and is connected to. It's closed back, while the amp is open back, so it's a nice blend.
Also, I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Peavey Valveking Royal 8, which is a Class A all-tube 5-watter selling online for $99 right now. They are backordered until December 9th, though. I like the simplicity/purity of the amp and think my pedals will work well with it. |

| My favorite set up was a Marshall JCM-800 with an Sd-1 and Ce-2 in front. The Sd-1 was set with level full and gain about 9o'clock so it was just pushing the amp. Eq was Bass 12 O/C Mids 1 O/C Treble 1-2 O/C and Pres 1 O/C. Amp gain was anywhere between 2-4 o'clock and Master on 10 o'clock. Next was Peavey 6506's but they were mega noisy even with a decimator so for practicality it's a Boss ME-8 into a Marshall clean channel and I just tweak the eq on the amp (normally everything at 10 o'clock) |

None!
I haven't use a real amp for about 7 years now. Before that I'd used Marshall's or Mesa/Boogie combos.
I now use DI-boxes/amp-modelling and go straight from my pedals to the mixer, PA, recorder, etc... If I want on stage monitoring I use my Roland keyboard amp.
For modelling amps over the past years I've used Boss' GP20, and GT8; Line6's POD; and Tech21 SansAmp Acoustic DI.
So,to sort of answer your question, my "amp" at the moment is a Tech 21 SansAmp TriAC. |

Hmmmm, Dr Bob
I use a varity of singel ended tube amps even when jamming, Epi Valve Jr, Vox AC4TV, Fender Champion 600. When more volume is needed I have a Carvin Vintage 33 and can borrow from a friends collection of vintage Marshall, Vox Gibson or Fender. At home I use the low watters but have come to enjoy Line6 Spider III 15, this amp sound really good with pedals and the clean channel.

Pedalboard into a Pod XT PRO in a small rack...direct(unprocessed) output to the front of a Musicman HD 130 combo gain 5,treble 4,middle 3,bass 7,master 7....processed stereo outputs of the pod into a two channel SM audio TB 202 tube mic pre for a volume boost and some EQ then into a 1U stereo power amp and out to 1x12 cabs either side of the Musicman...i have a 1U Dynacord leslie simulator in the stereo effects loop of the pod..the rack is controlled by a 4 way Line6 FBV 4 switcher...i've also used a Marshall Superbass MKII into a 2x12 cab with celestion greenback speakers with the Musicman in a stereo setup with good results.....still have the marshall but it's getting to many knocks on the road plus i wanted to use the rack.....
P.S ..the Pods amp and cab sims are all off i'm really only using it for reverb/extra delay patches especially the stereo delays and analogue sims of tube echo units/DM-2... etc.... also it has a switchable stereo effects loop with is really handy for bringing the Dynacord/leslie in and out on a song.... this whole setup started out as a wet/dry/wet/ rig but it isn't really anymore because i have my TR-2,CE-2,BF-2 and my two DD-3's still on my board with my compressor, wah and overdrive...just couldn't live without them..... .... |

I using a Marshall DSL50 from 1998 with drake trafo's. I use this head with a Marshall 1912 cab (1x12") at home and sometimes on stage or also at home, with a Marshall 1960A Limited edtion cab (JCM800 cab, limited red from 1995). From de DSL, i use the FX loop for some Boss pedals like the DD-5/6, DC-2/3, PN-2 etc. Sometimes i'am playing in a stereo set up with de DSL and a Maquis head (100 watt tube head, a Marshall plexi clone but its a very clean sounding head) with a Marshall 2x12" cab (old cab, has a 4x12" size). Sounds really great :)

Marshall JCM800 100W 1959 Super Lead Mk.II non-master volume model into a 1960A cab loaded with Celestion G75T's.
Gritty trebbly channel I unused and volume set to zero, pedals plugged into bassy clean channel II and volume kept low because its a rediculously loud amp, like seriously freaky loud. EQ controls are as follows: presence 9, bass 8, mid 3, treble 8.
Pedals of choice: MT-2 for regular distortion with occasional FZ-3 in front for extra whacky distortion, DC-2/DC-3 with GE-7 for clean; and any of the Boss OD's for overdrive, they all pretty much sound the same to me.
Of course this set up only gets booted up once in a blue moon, my trusty Roland CUBE 15 with absolutely no pedals gets used every day. |

Four low watt Marshalls from the 80s, all of them have different speakers, The four together act like a 50 watt amp. It certainly is very powerful and fun to play with.
The there is a host of other small, valve amps, some have been custommade for me others do carry names such as WEM. Most of these have celestion speakers.
Then there is a semler Treble 'n' Bass which I had modified a long time ago. One channel gives an almost Vox kind of dist. the other [Bass channel] is still as it was originally.
Then there is a silverface Bassman 135 and a Silverface Twin Reverb. I have various cabs., play from time to time through PA speakers and I also work a lot with DI boxes and Sans amp pedals.
In most settings I find that the smaller amps can sound similar to the bigger amps---with the help of pedals!!!---, as long as I do not have to compete with other loud instruments [which is what I seriously dislike anyway!!]
I also find that almost any different musical setting begs for a different set-up which is something which I enjoy and dislike at the same time. It is never playing on save really and you are forever scraching your head how to get a good tone.
As far as dist. sounds I really like them subtle, but at the same time having character. It seems that Celestion speakers do add for a lot of colour in your sound. When I use the Selmer with a Black Widow speaker the sound is very dry, not matter what the reverbsetting is. Using the Marshalls the sound is more diverse and colourful, less dry.
The Fenders have their own sound, can also be very dry at times.
Also find that Modern amps cannot really give you that sound of the past, even though the modellingsounds come close, but the feel is not there. Pedals and good amp is still the way to go, and something as simple as a Sansamp pedal can mimick a valve amp very well at almost any volumesetting.
NO I do not believe in "turning your valveamps up make them sound better". I just like them to be at comfortable listening level, that is where I play well and it sounds good to me. The pedals can act very well as boosters and exhiters.
All the same really, we are not telling each other any news here, we would need a meeting and some jams to see what each of us is about, and yep, I would really like that, so maybe one day when we all have enough time and money we shall meet up somewhere who knows??!! |

Different settings for different amps.
Onstage, depending on which band I'm working with, I'm using either a Victoria Regal(15 watt class A, 15" speaker), a Victorilux(35 watt class AB, 15" speaker), a 20112(5E3 clone, 12" speaker), or if I really need to growl, a Mesa Boogie Mark I(100 watt, 12" speaker). |

| Thanks for replies, guys! Lots of cool amps and gear listed here. To add to my original entry, overall I prefer my MIJ DS-1 for distortion over my amp's OD channel. It's clearer and more dynamic. For metal, though, I prefer the OD channel. I use it with an SD-1 with the level at 3 o'clock and gain all the way off. The SD-1 makes a huge difference in tightening things up because the amp is kind of muddy. I'll add my CE-2 as needed for chorus and the DD-6 for guitar solos and riffing. One other thing about my amp. It has both High Gain and Low Gain input jacks. The pickups on my guitar (Peavey Wolfgang Standard Deluxe) are pretty hot so plugging in to the Low Gain jack gives me a cleaner sound better suited for pedals. But when using the amp's OD channel I'll go with the High Gain jack. |

A JCM 800 split channel 1x12 combo with a CE-3 and a BD-2 in front of it. And a DD-3 in the loop, for some reason my CE-3 hums too much in the loop when used with distortion, so I put it in front and it sounds just fine.
Settings: (these are bedroom settings since I don't play guitar in a band, I normally play bass).
Clean channel: volume 1 (this channel is loud as hell). treble 7 bass 5 Overdrive channel: gain 8 volume 7 treble 6 middle 6 bass 6 (see a pattern here? ) master reverb: 3 master volume: 2
These smaller combo versions don't have a presence control, instead it is preset at 5 or so. |
