I have a Boss SE70 half-rack which has served me well since '93. Here's the descriptions of the OD/Dist's from the manual:
Natural OD: A natural distortion simulating an over-drive vacuum tube amplifier Vintage OD: Distortion from the OD-1 Turbo OD: Full bodied distortion combined w subtle nuances of overdrive Crunch: A light distortion Distortion: Provides a standard distiortion sound Metal 1: (I never use this) Metal 2: (I never use this)
OK, its obvious that the "Vintage OD" is the OD-1 and the "Turbo OD" is the OD-2. The "Distortion" is probably the DS-1. I don't care about the Metal 1 & 2.
However, the 2 that I always go to are the "Natural OD" and "Crunch".
Does anyone know which 2 pedals Boss was trying to emulate with those?
(I have my theories, but I want to see what anyone else says first) |

these are just guesses, but "natural" probably emulates the SD-1...
and "crunch" might refer to the DS-2. |

Thanks. Yea IMO the "Natural OD" seems to be the SD-1. I got the PDF manual for the SD1 - says: "replicate the sound of a tube driven amplifier" which is very, very close to the description in the SE70 manual.
I'm satisfied that the "Natural OD" = SD-1.
I'm not so sure the "Crunch" is the DS-1. I got the PDF manual for the BD-2 and it says: "The BD2 is the overdrive that has been specifically designed for crunch distortion" while the BossUS website describes the BD2 as "The BD-2 Blues Driver delivers the creamy, yet crunchy sound associated with great blues guitar"
Nowhere else does Boss use the word "Crunch" so much to describe any other pedal. To my ears, the "Crunch" in the SE70 sounds closer to an OD than a Dist.
Even though the SE70 came out in '93, and the BD-2 later in '95, I'm thinking the "Crunch" in the SE70 is essentially the BD-2. What does anyone else here think? |

I had forgotten about this, but decided to revisit.
Mystery solved: Crunch = SD-2 which came out in early '93 (not BD-2, not DS-2) My own testing showed that when cranked, the "Natural OD/SD-1" sounds identical to this, and having a "Crunch" setting on the pedal itself is the clincher.
To summarize:
Natural OD: SD-1 Vintage OD: OD-1 Turbo OD: OD-2 Crunch: SD-2 Distortion: DS-1
(I still never use Metal 1 & 2) |
