Greetings to all from Finland! I've been reading this great forum for a while but only now I had a urgent need to join this club of "Boss-experts"... I hope you don't mind my English, I may be in a bit of rust...

But let's go to the point. Does anybody know, or does anybody have a well sophisticated guess how exactly the distortion is created in ML-2? I'm very, very interested about this information, because I saw some posting here, which I can't find anymore, where this same question raised but it ended unsolved... The thing is, that I bought my first Boss-pedal 2 months ago. After some serious testing I ended up with ME-70, which has something that I have desired most: the ML-2. But simulation! See where I'm getting at? OK...there is nothing wrong with this simulation, but of course, if you find simulation this good you WILL grow even hungrier and want to find out if the real thing would be even little bit better!

It really has one thing that annoys me. I've never really understood this hate against DSP:s, but I noticed that some very low chords and distorted highs create unwanted...digital buzz. Sounds like there were some errors in the sound if you dare to sustain long enough. Bad, bad thing...but you have no possibilities to notice this if you play with a band; mimic Satriani and it pops to your ear every time.

So, long story, has anyone really compared the actual ML-2 VS ME-70? Or has anyone compared any simulations VS The Real Thing? Or do I have to do it myself? Well, I do it anyways. Someone guessed that the distortion would be analog and other creations made by the help of DSP. That would explain it being so silent, some sort of noise supressor inside...or arguments of little amount of unwanted reverb. Or is the chip even DSP inside? I made some Sherlock-thing last night and tried to make conclusions...I ended up with the owners manual, which very clearly states in the end: "This equipment has been tested to comply...CLASS B DIGITAL DEVICE..." I assume this nails it, DSP inside?

I believe it is a hybrid pedal. But actually, after trying and generally hearing some wery bad full-analog-noise-creations...I must say that if it sounds that good, I don't care if it has DSP/DSP:s. Of course it is a bit sad, but maybe the world is heading towards this way...

But there is truly one great thing in this new wave: no more electrolyte condensers, no more drying elcos or popping! Longer lifetime!

Cheers!

Hi InTone and welcome!

Apart from the input/output buffers and signal routing, the ML-2 is 100% digital/DSP.

PS: Finland is one of the most interesting places I've ever been... I have never been to Sweden and I'm sure it is equally cool

Hi InTone

Welcome to the forum from Australia.

I'm not 100% sure of how COSM is modelled,
I'm guessing because it's proprietary Algorithms,
that you won't find too much about it written anywhere.

Your English is excellent & very understandable.

Regards Dr. Bob

Thank you for the information and welcomings!

Although the info was quite sad...but still excatly as I assumed it to be. Actually I don't really get it: why making a separate pedal, if the same chip and stuff is already housed in a multieffects-board? Is it for another target group, that more money can be made? Well...that would seem logical.

But is it possible, that the ML-2 simulation in ME-70 is equal to the "real thing"? That if I get the ML-2, I get the same sound and same problem? What differencies there could be? This thing gets almost comical proportions...
I mean, it seems quite odd to put all the..."analog" components into pedal, if they are not needed in this case, to create the distortion. Is it not the same thing in ME-70, or in any other multi-digital-box, that the signal routing is analog and effecting is digital?

Perhaps I should stop whining and staring the specs...and solely trust my ears.

P.S: I know that Sweden is...almost equal to Finland. I've been at my neighbors once, which is pathetic...too long distance, I think. If someone drops by to this gloomy soil, hit me a note...I'll buy you a round of our fine spirits.
