Hi lauries2
I-we are all interested in hearing about, how it compares to the original - stock SD-1 OD sound.
I have a couple of older SD-1's I might consider modding. I'm sure Christo is already pulling his to bits...

Might not get to it this weekend - getting to the store to buy the new pots is problematic, but I'll see what I can do
I will, of course, give a report! |

Well, I do have a SD1 that I modded to a TS808...
Gotta finish Scrappy's pedal, then work on my latest wah mod
If you can't find a 5k pot, get any smaller one and drop a resistor across it. A 10k pot with a 10k resistor provides you with a 5k. |

This place give me the poo's. No 100k log or 5k linear pots anywhere in town. Have to order them from Smallbear or somewhere.
The store guys said "no one fixes anything any more because they cant get the parts". Chicken or egg I wondered...

Hi lauries2 & Guys
Good point, but I know lots of people that fix lots of stuff. It's Just getting harder & harder to find component suppliers.
In a way, we are very fortunate here in Australia, as there are still some really great companies that sell components. I have a at least 4 within an hours drive of my Lab. But I sense a growing & nasty rend to minimize component stock, and even worse still, deleting all components off the inventory.
One of the great Hobbyist startup-up companies here in Australia (Dick Smith), has now removed all components off their inventory in all but the Super stores, & they only carry 3 of any component... It was a sad day, when I heard that news; Dick Smith was such a moving force, & a self made man, who went from one little shop in Sydney Aust. to a store in almost every major town, The supermarket chain Woolworths purchased 51% of his stock back in the late 80's early 90's, and now own it outright. They have progressively moved the store to a Tandy like, finished electronic goods store.
I am sure lauries2 remembers good old Tricky Dicky, as he was know to the Tech community here, even before Trick Dicky (Nixon).
Apologies if my little historical & philosophical rant, is a bit off topic.
But it's a concerning trend, I know of very few young people with the Fix-it mentality, or even the will to try & build a kit. I try to instill these skills in all my apprentices, but It's a sad & slowly loosing battle.
It's a refreshing moment, when I hear about, or meet younger Techs/hobbyist's, like Christo, ptero & Jack, & the other people, willing to have a go at soldering & modding their gear. Not forgetting older guys like lauries2, Goran, Franzomi, bossarea & others, apologies if I missed your name.
Regards Dr. Bob |

The Source, formerly Radio Shack might be bought by Blockbusters, Looks like another hobby store with electronic parts will be turning into yet another store with just electronic gizmos
If you stick a 5k6 resistor across a 250k or 500k pot, it'll give you about 5.5k |

Ordering from Small Bear isn't too bad, they don't overly charge you on shipping, and the times I have ordered from the I have had my order within 10 days or less, but I don't know if it might take longer to Canada. If all you are needing is the pots, I would go ahead and do the other stuff now, then once the pots come in, just finish it up. |

Hi Laurie If it's HD related, look at a program called Spinrite.
It's help many thousands of people get out os really hairy situations. Steve Gibson has been around for a long time, very trust worthy & runs a PC everything security company at the link below. Very approachable as well, & trust him like your mother.
Spend some time there, He has a heap of free security related goodies, you can down load. & has a weekly podcast.
http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm
I am not affiliated with GRC or Steve in any way, just been using his S/W since version 1.0.
I am sure that everyone here will be willing help you rebuild your schematics & user manual library if nothing else. Ask us in PM or here on the forum for what you can't get back.
I noticed you updated your member name-details.
Regards Dr. Bob

Dr. Bob - thank you! In the intervening 6 hours I've managed to buy a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch HDD adapter and have copied all the data files off the laptop HDD onto the kids computer. Library is not lost afterall - see if you can guess how happy I am
It looked to be a total failure - but now it looks to be motherboard only. Still a crappy weekend, but at least I have my data!
Thanks agaon for the support/////

And so it goes... Are we (old and young) fix-er-uppers the last of an era? |

Hi Laurie
Good Point. But I think we all already know the long term answer.
Great to hear about your data recovery efforts.
