I'm looking to get something so that I can lay down basic patterns to MIDI in Cubase. Up until now, I've been writing all my beats using my MIDI keyboard step by step.

My friend let me borrow a Roland PAD-80 that he has, and I'm thinking I want something similar... but newer. The PAD-80 is nice and simple, but doesn't handle rolls and faster hits very well (even with the velocity and sensitivity all the way up).

I don't really want to get an electronic kit due to $$$, and I don't need something that has preset tones in it as I'll be using some VSTs via Cubase for all the sounds. I just need a multi-pad (preferably one with the ability to incorporate a kickdrum pedal/trigger) item that can handle light hits as well as hard hits so I can record the MIDI hits to a file.

Suggestions?

i've tried this setup and it works very well:
a simple drum machine like the alesis d4 or else, small piezoelectric sensors( the back caps of piezo tweeters, without the difusors and filled with silicon or resin, !!leave the piezo thingy inside!!) conected to each input desired(kick, snare, rim, tom1,2,3, and some percusive efx) and then thru a midi cable to your sistem.
its pretty basic it just needs a 1/4 in plug and cable from each sensor. you can play on the sensors themselves or tape them to real drums or whatever you play, just adjust sensitivity for each instrument so you dont get false triggers
good luck.
as i told i've tried it and works well.

I got myself a Yamaha DD-55 for the same reason. Laying down the rhythm is so boring and takes so long that I often gave up before I got it right.

I'm not using midi when recording. I'm just recording the output directly into Adobe Audition. The sounds from the Yamaha isn't very impressive so my idea was to use the DD-55 as a trigger and using Midi I could use the sounds from my Boss DR-880. This worked for all pads except the snare pad which would only give me silence so I had to give it up. I still use it for recording though and I like how the pads are layed out compared to the Roland pads.

If I bought a pad now I'd probably have gone with something like the PAD-80 or the newer SPD-20.
