I have noticed that most of the SG-1 pedals that come up on Ebay, or are for sale have silverscrews. My SG-1 is the black screw version though, and a late specimen probably from 1981 judging by its serial, but I havent seen many of them around.
Could it perhaps be that once they came out on the market people bought them out of curiosity, but after a while when black screws were introduced market lost interest in the pedal, because it had proven to be of limited usefulness... Therefore, perhaps black screws are less common on the SG-1 than silverscrews. Just a theory...

Im pretty sure the black screw SG-1`s are scarcer, I never knew they existed until I saw a picture of one in the Boss book. The reason for this can be Sunburst theory or maybe that a much more limited number were manufactured with the black screw due to the time-line (when exactly the silver screw was introduced). It would be very interesting to know how many SG-1s was made, silver and plastic.

| I would like to see production numbers on all the silver screw pedals, or pedals that entered the market as silver screws. That would be very interesting for comparison. |

Lets presume that 700 silver screw SG-1s was produced and only 200 with the black one, in that case the black should be considered more worth/rare. Like Les Pauls, the Sunburst (!) ones are much more sought after than the earlier Gold tops. But to have production records of all early Boss pedals would really be something anybody on this forum who has contacts inside Roland/Boss company???

Theoretically there should be more SG-1s with silverscrew, since black screws were introduced around 1980-81 considering that production of SG-1 ended in 1981. It would be interesting to compare yearly outputs for pedals manufactured from 1977 up to, lets say 1983. So one can see if and how production output may have changed during the early years due to more efficient manufacturing.
There are of course no comparison to Boss output today compared with 25 years ago. But over a perhaps 5-7 year timespan it would be interesting to follow the production output.
So if anyone can dig up reliable production stats for the early years, its would be like discovering a gold mine. |
