Forgive the slight OT, but I'm an OD-1 noob. That thing has a quad op-amp?!? Do they only use 2 of the four op-amps in it?
BTW, my most recent play-it-to-death-until-you're-sick-of-it CD is the first Pretenders album. I know James Honeyman Scott used a Boss overdrive, and based on the date, I assume it was an OD-1. I love every guitar sound on that album. |

the 14-pin Opamps were used from the OD-1's inception (Nov 77) to about #8800-9000 (December 79/Jan 80), when the circuit changed to accomodate the more readily available JRC4558.. I have some of both, but it's been years since I did a side-by-side comparison. I just know that I too love the OD-1. |

Hi Rich_S In the early 14 Pin (3403) quad opamp version. Roland-Boss used all 4 opamp sections.
Two of the opamps were used as the input & output buffers. The other two sections are as per the standard 8 pin 4558 version, and are used for the overdrive circuitry.
I don't doubt that there's some difference in tone.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Why did you quote this post here? mitchelr didn't post a sales advert. He mentioned that he might post in the buy/sell area but hasn't done so far so quoting the rules at this point seems a bit pointless. |

Umm... That was after 13 Yuenglings in 4 hours. I had one rough day at work following it! But not an excuse. I appologize Dr. Bob, and I'm sorry if I offended you. If Your ever in Philly, we'll have a drink and laugh about it |

And now back to the old OD-1s!!!...Anybody else here notice that the 14 pin op amp equipped ones go for alot more coin? A Retheon or NEC fetches almost double what an LD SS 4558 version does. I wonder if it has anything to do with Alalog Mike saying the quad op amp ones sound better? Funny, when he talks Ibanez TS he says that same crappy JRC4558 is the good one! Well after all he is a buisness man and his buisness is changing out op amps! Guess he gets a few vintage 4558's from OD-1's for Tube Screamers! Got to thank him though, as I was able to snap up an 81 TS with what he refered to as crappy JRC2043 op amp for $85 and my 81 LD OD-1 for $75. Thanks Mike, you are the King of Tone! |
