the FZ-2 is more versatile. but the FZ-3 can hold its own. i too find fuzz very hard to use in my playing.

IMHO, FZ-3 is as great as FZ-2 is poor.

FZ-3 is known for being the only Boss pedal without a single opamp/ Therefore, it's a really simple design, and simple design are often better than huge ones.

FZ-2 seems caricatural to my ears in both modes. The clean boost mode is usable, but why a clean boost in a fuzz pedal ??

I own some great Ge fuzzes, and of course FZ-3 can't really compeat with them. But... for the price, I find the FZ-3 great.

Of course, it's a fuzz... it's not as simple to get into a band as an overdrive...

Both have to be played like a fuzz and not a distortion or overdrive pedal. If you turn the gain down and lower the treble, the FZ-3 can be used more like a od/dist pedal. I only use the FZ's for special sounds and not an all around od/dist pedal.

A very good pedal, not the best fuzz in the world of course, but you can achieve great sounds with it

i use one in my set up,not for rythmn type distortion but more for fattening up lead lines like eric johnson and david gilmour i use strats and a tele mostly so i find it perfect for thisi don't really use a real heavy distortion sound, more of a crunch from my ds1 or if i do need it a bit heavier i kick in my od2 as well...but the fz3 gives my lead sound something the other two can't...i read somewhere before that boss based this pedal on a later model fuzzface i don't know if thats true but the guy at www.gilmourish.com used one for a long time in a floyd tribute band and the fella out of the manic street preachers uses one as well as far as i know...jaybird what sort of amp are you using...?? i personally find that older simpler amps without massive gain stages work best with these type of pedals on a fairly clean setting(crunchy amp sound is fine as well)also from personal experience i think guitars with active pickups into these type of pedals is too much for the pedal to handle....to my ears the sound just gets too mushy and undefined.....thats just my opinion use your ears to decide..maybe another pedal would suit the type of sound your going for e.g......od3,ds1 etc or maybe a big muff or a orginal fuzzface....

i think your on the money stratosphere..and isn't that what all those botique pedal makers claim for their(super duper zillion dollar only making 50 of these) fuzz pedals...and to think you can still get the od2 and the fz3 for very little moolah....imho the choice of guitar, amp and especially speakers will affect the end sound..not to get too much off topic but i recently tried my musicman combo with the 2x12 cab with v30's off my marshall i disconnected the musicmans speakers and the sound of the amp was amazing.... much more sparkle and body to the sound.. so good i'm thinking of putting them in the musicman and putting the greenbacks i have in storage back into the marshall cab...!the ds1,fz3,and my od2 sound great lately and i think it is because of this..i.e messing around with different speakers and settings on the amps etc...i'm even getting a decent sound out my cs3 these days....less is more on the gain especially when using two or three of these type of pedals at the same time.....

I don't know if my user name is a tip off but, yeah I dig the fz-3. When you play really fast it has a cool choping sound I like. Also if you use a ds-1 with it as a booster you can get some insane pinch harmonix almost has that classic octave up tone. One of my favorite boss
To bad they only made it for 2 years.

good choice of amp jaybird...i don't know bro maybe an overdrive will suit you better...i have an old selmer stadium rated at about 14 watts, very basic amp and when i use it i usually just plug the guitar straight in and crank it up...it doesn't really like pedals especially fuzz, overdrive, distortion and compression, they seem to push it too hard...my two other amps the marshall and the musicman are rated at 100 and 130 watts so they have a lot of clean headroom(i don't play at these volumes.!!)but a small amp like the gibson i personally would just crank and use the guitar volume to control it...but maybe if your in a house or apartment this isn't an option...i use a fz3,ds1,od2 and a cs3 on my pedalboard for my gain sounds..or maybe try a clean booster like a mxr micro amp...

i have played at a few house parties and did noit want to drag all the cables and cords and pedals and powersupplies all over so i just took my amp and guitar ...wow it sounded very good all by itself? i love the overdrive sound i own a od-2r and od-3 as well as the raspy fz-3..I am not sure but my OD-3 has a lot of noise ??like a single coil guitar is plugged in??? anyone have this? the fz-3 is quiet and the od-2r is not as loud as the OD-3? I like the sound I may be using the wrong type of guitar for the sound im lookin for? I play a SG standard with two humbucker pickups...I dont know are these active pickups?

yeah it is noisy, but I think the DS-1 is noisier... anyway, it will improve a lot, making the noise almost disappear if you use humbucking pickups...
