| Hi, I just got a SD- 1, MIJ, serial number 338100 produced on August 1983. I opened it and never heard of the chip that�s inside: 4558 DX JRC 3153. Is it good? What are the infos about it? Can you please help me guys? Tks! |

The JRC part is the manufacturer, the 3153 is the date code (I believe), and the 4558 makes it the world's most common dual op-amp. Absolutely nothing unusual about it. I will hazard my first post seeming unfriendly by adding if you don't recognize the 4558 nomenclature, I wouldn't start my mod career with a vintage MIJ pedal. But if you're just asking out of curiosity, and have no intention of modding the pedal, then forget what I just said . |

Hi Ranjam! I�m familiar with 4558, but the prob is that most of chips that we talk about are 4558D and 4558DD and this one is 4558DX. |

I may be talking out of my butt here, which wouldn't be the first time. However, I'll venture a guess that depending on if the chip was sourced from Raytheon, or whoever, the suffix may have to do with the slew rate, bias, or whatever. But the 4558 part, and the pinout, won't be any different. I have a hunch the DX means something only to the maker of the chip. Since this isn't a critical application, I'll also venture any 4558 chip will work. With a TLO72 you may have to bypass the HF from the power supply. With a Burr-Brown OPA2604 you have to, at least. Other than that, I'm seldom surprised how universal op-amps seem to work in simple guitar pedals. One boring example; somone gave me a DS-1 with a blown IC from the wrong adaptor being plugged in. The shunt diode was also blown open. I didn't have a diode, and the chip was a BA728N, also discontinued at all my local electronics stores. But they had an old stock NTE928S, and I took it without even looking at the chip carefully. I get it home, and notice it has nine pins! I look up both IC's and notice the NTE just has a parallel Vcc pin at pin #1, and pin #2 through pin #9 match up to pin #1 through pin #8 on the BA728N. I just snip off in #1 to the NTE chip, and it works fine on the DS-1! Very uncritical. I didn't bypass the Vcc or adjust the bias at all. It actually sounds pretty good as is, but I smell some DS-1 mods in my future, just because I have a $6 pedal and nothing to lose. This story is boring, and likely useless to anyone. But I just relay it to demonstrate how uncritical a lot of this parts swapping is. The DX, and whatever it means, is likely meaningful to switching or RF applications, and much less important to a simple audio amplifier. I may be wrong, but I sure wouldn't worry. |
