either use a compressor or.... erm.... no I guess using a compressor is your only option (that I can think of) if you don't wanna change pickups

you might wanna take a look at the new moog guitar though.... it's not the most beautiful guitar ever built but it's sustain and mute features are amazing

I don't know about altering or modding a standard single coil(i saw your web page so i know your pretty handy at this stuff) fernandes make a sustainer pickup for some of their guitars but i don't know if you can get it as a retro fit for any guitar....

A stacked humbucker will do the trick. Seymour Duncan comes to mind. The two pickup coils are mounted on top of each other, so it will fit in a standard stratocaster without cutting the pickguard or routing out the body to fit. It will likely come with a tap option so you can run it single coil to keep the original sound, or double-coil to beef up the signal strenght and perceived sustain.

To answer your question, if compression does not help, you need to buy a new pickup.

I have one of those SD pickups in my tele wired to a mini switch to split the coils for a more authentic tele sound, but it's not as powerful as the neck humbucker in my SG 2000S... even untapped.... i thought Von's original question was more to do with infinite sustain... ala The Edge with U2 Joshua Tree era......or Von do you mean like Starr 36 suggests more of a Santana type of thing....?....

hmm. good one franzoni ... an e-bow and various compressors will do the sustain forever sound; i can also set the drive on my amp way hot, but keep the guitar volume down, rolling on the volume and bending the guitar neck simultaneously to do a slow vibrarto (but more like makes you point the guitar at your speaker vibrato) can also let you do some controlled feedback. Key word: 'controlled'.

Thanks for your interest guys.............I mean like the Fernandes sustainer

I seem to remember see an add in Guitar World some years back where this guy was selling a kit that could transform a standard pick up into a sustainer.............

I'd just buy a Fernandes sustainer but I play 7 strings and no one seems to make a 7 string sustainer anymore.

I rememnber the Edge talking about a guy,i think his name was michael bridges who invented the infinite sustain but it was an outboard effect,a mix of a compressor and a e-bow i think...now to create the effect live he uses a fernandes pickup in one of his guitars...unless you want to invent something yourself.......
