In case you were wondering what the designator letter was on pots (the "A" in "A50k").

It is important to note that the meaning of "A" and "B" was swapped a few years ago... so care is needed reading old schematics. The tapers shown in the link and graphic here are the current/new meanings.

Here is the graphic in case the site has gone away...

Also found this link - interesting reading about what you hear vs what you see:

Good artical Laurie, where can i find a knob that goes to 11?
here's more to add to it...

Another good point is to avoid cheap commercial audio pots, the taper is horrible.
Snagged four 250k from evilbay for $20, and at 7 on the dial, or 1:00 its just starting to reach 100k.

Hello everyone !
It's my first post here !

Does anyone know when the swap occured ?

In my DSD-2, I have to replace three broken pots : original ones are marked as type B for feedback and level, type A for Time...

But in the mid 80's, which one is linear, which one is log ??

Doh, I didn't know they swapped A and B. I'm waiting for delivery of a bunch of pots and I may just have ordered the wrong type.

It's actually turned out to be difficult to find references to the date... there is some text on it here: http://sound.westhost.com/pots.htm and here http://www.about-guitar-amps.com/newsletter_25th_june_2007.html

I think it happened in the 70's so we should be OK with the Boss compacts - they will all have new marking pots. The only definitive way to know in old equipment is to measure the pot.
