I am happy to hear that your mods have met success, Laurie. So now the questions. I use mine with a 1X12 cab, so it is basically a 212 combo, in two pieces. I am happy with the way it is with the cab and new tubes. Would these tone stack mods change the performance in the 212 configuration? Can't you get 16 ohm Eminence Cannabis Rex speakers or is there an advantage to the 8 ohm speaker? Did you already own it? And did you try the new speaker before the tone stack mod?  |

G'day! I got a smokin deal on the Cannabis Rex 8 (it was in stock), hence the 8 Ohm speaker. The Blue Guitar folks also said that the 8 Ohm tap works/sounds better - because the amp's feedback is taken from the 8 Ohm tap and its best if the feedback and speaker are on the same tap so the transformer doesn't add any effects.
Didn't try it before the mod - I had to pull the chassis out to remove the speaker so I wasn't going to reasemle the amp before I did the mods on the chassis.
The tone stack mods would definitely change the sound in a 212 configuration. Not sure how. but I'd expect for the better as in the 112 config. It's all so subjective there is no way to call it... you might hate it, or it might be the best thing for you since sliced bread

I guess this explains why the whole amp works so much better with the cab, because the amp's feedback is taken from the 8 Ohm tap and its on the 8 ohm tap with the cab connected. I have always been of the mind that the classic 30 should have been a twin in the first place.
I installed the tube guard from Peavey it was only $20 or so and it came to the Peavey dealer in only a few days. It is coated black and really draws a lot of heat away from the chassis. It also protects the tubes, but I think the primary purpose of it being installed on the newer ones is to act as a heat sink.
One more question (at least) how long did the whole job take, ie. what in your opinion would be a reasonable quote from an electronics repair shop? |

The entire job start to finish was about 4 hours. That included over an hour mucking around with the window foam and installing the speaker which you could do yourself? Also included nearly an hour fixing the hotmelt glue on the fuse.
I'd say maybe 2 hours start-to-finish for the PCB mods for a competent tech who had the parts on hand.
Will look into the tube guard. Do you have the part number?

Looks like a bit of bridging on some of the solder work.
