Hi all

i want to get the ball rolling on my new rig and it's looks like i'm going to have to scale back a bit on the original idea.. i'm going to run the rack through a seperate power amp with a couple of 1x12's either side of the main amp and one of these marshall power amps is for sale locally for 150 euro...i have a couple of celestion v30's for the cabs..anyone any experience with these type of amps..i still have the valve amp in the centre, this is just for the stereo effect of the dynacord rotary unit and some stereo reverb and delay ....

Hey Franz,
If it is the "Valvestate 8008", do not let the the term "Valve" suck you in. No valve present, ask Uncle Bob. I use this for my ultra-clean side of a dual, stereo clean/stereo dirty system. I like it alot. Works great for clean & also responds well to a tube preamp in front of it. I ran it for years with an ADA MP-1 in front of it. Rippin machine!!! Yell at me if you want more insight, happy to oblige.

Cheers T-D.... i knew it didn't have a valve but i had heard it was a bit warmer sounding for guitar than a ordinary SS power amp..i plan on using the Pod XT pro on a tube preamp setting to drive it as i've read reports of these working well together... really all this is for a little reverb and some extra delay and the rotary sim effect in stereo...either of my main amps marshall superbass or musicman HD 130 combo will still be the mainstay of my rig fed off the direct out(unprocessed) off the pod..my boss pedalboard will of course still be used before the marshall as normal... whats the story with relibility...? i've read there is two different models..one with a black face and one with a gold face..this is the gold faced one i'm looking at.... i read a few horror stories on HC reviews of these going on fire but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the guys over there were using guitar leads instead of speaker leads off the back of this sucker......i heard/read similar stories about the marshall powerbrake attenuator until someone asked the guy what type of connecting leads he was using.............

Hi again Franz,
No horror stories from me. I've had it well over a dozen years & only just recently took it in for routine maintenance. I'm a HEAVY SMOKER & wanted it looked at professionally and cleaned. It has a semi-warmer tone to it than other power amps. BTW - mine is the black-faced model.
Your proposed setup sounds way cool. You'll HAVE TO let us know if you actually get this and how it pans out for you. Sounds like you are alot like me, trying to think outside the box & augment shit any way you can. I like it.

The one thing I've heard about the Power Brake and other attenuators is that they can be hell on transformers. "I" cannot attest to this, but I've heard it enough times from varied sources to take a bit of stock into that line of thinking.
Peace out Franz,
T-D

Well what can I say?
Loud mother, Heavy bitch... for a single rack unit.
Most of the weight is the MASSIVE Toroidal power transformer, & the all steel chassis.

I believe, that the only difference, between the Gold & Black panel 8008's is just a cosmetic ace plate change.
I have the schematics for the 8008 & the 8080, if you need them.

TD is correct, the only VALVE-TUBE ANYTHING in the 8008 is the word Tube on the rear panel Voicing slide switch,
that alters a few bits in the negative feedback loop of the amp;
Effectively it's just a 2 position Presence control.

I was lucky & got mine of evilbay (not working)... cheap

TD, which setting do you have the voicing switch set to?
Normal - or the duller Bullsh!t tube setting?

Like TD says, don't kid yourself, this is one loud mother of an amp, for a solid state that is.

I have never gigged mine, as I have a couple of real tube amps.
And the Mesa 50-50 Two unit 88mm rack head.

Honestly for me:
It was going cheap.
I had really bad GAS.
I didn't own any kind of Marshall's.
It was cold & raining & I needed something to play soldering irons with.
And at 80W RMS+80W RMS, all in a 44mm 1 unit rack?
Plus like I said, I had a really bad case of GAS.

And ... mine is the Black Panel one.
The previous owner, had done the back smoke ungrade to some of the pretty colour painted carbon things.
I wonder if he was a guitar chord/speaker guy, like what you guys are talking about.

Regards Dr. Bob

...possibly..... there is some beauts out there in guitarland.....i plan on using this with the two 8 ohm V30's,i know this might drop the power a bit but i can never see a situation that my backline would ever be at full load.... i mike the valve amp and i can take a feed over to the main desk off the stereo XLR connections on the pod so i can put the lot through the rig,but i still like to feel an amp behind me...thanks guys i'm going to ring up and do a bit of haggling...you know "credit crunch,downturn..i'm a poor musician take pity......."...........
