I started in clan >I< under Pharcyde, then IOI (Incarnations of Immortality) with DeathInc, & into SK (Seattle Knights) where I made 10 maps (Q2 the 1st of which took about 6 months to learn the editor etc, Q3, Cube) & ran a total 3 different custom map ports (2 Q2+Lithium, 1 Q3+Coliseum) dating from 1997 through 2006. DeathInc coded a new mod called Abandon which was based on Lithium but with entirely new runes: Pestilence = shoot someone they'd run off & still "Gib" out health afterwards, Vampire = stole some of your opponents life points, & couple others, but most impressive was the Inviso rune that while held, you would be invisible & the screen would darken just a bit. Every few random seconds, it would seem to spit & sputter "almost" giving away your campy position. It was reviewed & received great accolades at PlanetQuake.
I ranked 14th in the world at CLQ (Champion League of Quake) & generally played an average of 8hrs/day (including work days) for 3 or 4 years straight. I went by the same name I do now.

I remember in the early days running a P2-233 w/Matrox 4MB video over 26.4Kbaud in a little postage-stamp sized window & forever tweaked my configs to eek out that last frame-per-second. After I got dual-channel ISDN I started toting the rail & was vicious.. spawn raping 13 year old newbies.
Additonally, I released two Custom Combat Enhancement Paks (one for Q2 & one for Q3) that reskinned the console background, HUD, & menu graphics/sounds; weapons, health, shards, framerate-friendly rocket explosion models, Quad timer, CD player aliases, new intermission song; teleporter, lava, & weapon sounds, CTF items, animated Q2 names, finally.. a new "Gib" model that when you shot a dead body, their SKULL would pop out.. funnier than all hell!
Here's a couple shots of maps I've made:
My 1st: http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/pics/nohope_qer.jpg http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/pics/aban.jpg http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/pics/nohope_arena.jpg http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/pics/nohope_flight.jpg http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/pics/nohope_lava.jpg http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/pics/nohope_ramp.jpg
Others (much, MUCH better):

Here is my old Deathmatch Heaven site where I started to review the top custom maps including a review of one of my own here http://gamefreaks.net/defrag/reviews/nohope.html! Read through them, I think you'll enjoy! Look for the links Q2, Q3, & Top Ten at the top of the screen & let me know what you think!

hehe.
i was semi-pro in the quake-world era of quake and retired before there was any real money in it.
team fortress was my mod of choice. my clan had a few guys from r3v and impulse 9 and we were ranked #1 in the world for 13 straight weeks. i ended up making it into the TF hall of fame for 2 different classes (soldier and sniper) and for a while was ranked in the top 5 in both classes at the same time. never got really good at DM, but could hold my own in DM6.
made a late transition to Q2. tried to get into lithium but gave up after i got banned from 22 servers in 2 days by people swearing i was a z bot due to my rail aim. gave up on it after that but it wasn't that big of a deal consider i hated the rocket lag and so few servers had the pro rocket mod installed (i used to rocket air juggle in Q1).
i couldn't stand half-life as the game play was slow motion and required more sneaking and spamming than skill so i retired.
tried Q3F a bit but got ping flooded my first match back in action after i had 23 frags in the first 7 minutes of the match and it had been over a year since i had nuke nabbers installed. realized it was a new game but the same old bs and i retired again. never really got back into it after that.
my p200mmx w/ 1mb onboard video is what got me famous hehe. seemed like i got a bit worse when i upgraded to a p2-450 w/ matrox g200 and sli voodoo 2's as i got way obsessed with frame rate and would get pissy if i started dropping frames at all.
my biggest claim to fame was probably winning a 64 player 1v1 TF tournament that was partially sponsored by valve. back in 1998 i won a pre-release copy of TF2... which was due out in 1999 (along with a copy of half-life 4 days before it was released). my tf2 copy still hasn't shown up even though the game is finally available and it made daikatana look ontime :P that tourney ended up leading to a lot of TFC and TF nerfs after i beat the head of the dev team 25 to -2. |

Its been 2 years since I've played & I miss it. My servers were the longest running all custom map playgrounds.. running Linux, for 8 years straight 5 nines with fresh maps as the community released 'em, but I ONLY chose the best of the best from ZTN, Kanaeda, Headshot, Lunaran, Fingers, Hafhead, Preacher, et al.
Man, those boys knew how to map. I think my last couple maps I made were finally approaching the layout, architecture, lighting, & gameplay of the greats. Very tedious work.. I didn't want any misaligned texs or HOMs.
Oh the late nights drinkin' beer.. Microsoft Gamevoice headset... the killing fields. You see, I grew up in high school playing StarGate (Defender II) which was pretty extreme gameplay & loved fast, highly skilled, controllable action from the get go. When Q1-test came out in '95, I knew it was my calling. Its a good thing I was divorced in '94 or I'm sure I soon would have been!
I simply didn't have a decent connection to even play QuakeWorld with its revamped network code. I do remember alot of those Q1DM levels being pretty tight with what seemed like 20+ people runnin' around shoving rockets up th'asses. I'm sorry I missed out on that heyday.

Oh btw, Serious Sam was quite refreshing. The engine was decent & graphics were good albeit a little on the bright side. The physics model sucked for character movement like jumping.. it felt unnatural but it was a breath of fresh air as far as FPS were concerned. I never DM'd her though.
We stood up both a Tribes & Half-Life server ports but only farted around with 'em for a few months. After Q3 came out, we DM'd heavily for about a year & a half until finally going back to good ol' Q2. Q3 was pretty sweet though & mapping was certainly a new challenge with curves. At least I didn't use that Qoole editor which was floating-point & generated leaks & errors fuggin everywhere. QERadiant was good enough. I never did play around with func-trains as I wasn't too interested in developing SP.
An online friend who mapped like crazy & who's levels were in my custom rotation finally went pro at Rogue moved up my way to Seattle, & his last project (I heard about) was Star Wars Battlefront for the Xbox. I guess he's finally makin' about as much as I am nowadays. Good for him; its always a kids dream to get rich as either a rock star or video game designer.
Lastly, who digs MAME? I actually bought (& still have) a StarGate cocktail table (I guess I can legally run the ROMs). I always told myself I would get one someday & finally did. It needs new RAM chips now but played great for a while. Its tough to find a local who can still repair 'em. I think I'll dump it on EvilBay sometime, but really don't wish to if I can just get it fixed up for some mayhem. While I don't miss Atari Combat, I indeed miss the magic '80-83 years I pumped quarters into classic vids. So, MAME is my saviour these days & I often jump in for a quick hour of ROBOTRON! |

Cool stuff man, I came in to the Quake thing a little late and was with {E} clan then WoD {HHR} Harley's clan he's pretty famous in the Q2 world he still kinda has free rein over at planetquake even though he doesn't play anymore. I first found a server called Humongulous WoD and that's where I played most the time DirtDemons was another. I remember some of those mappers Headshot and ZTN most notably we also ran quite a few of Maric's maps. I don't remember all the clan tags except IROQ and NIN I guess it's been to long. When I made maps I used QUARK. Quake really is one of the best game engines ever even to this day, fast paced and real fun I miss playing |

I did the first Quake in '96 and played Painkeep and Team Fortress. Once Quake 2 came out and was so different from the original Quake, I lost interest in it and stopped playing.
I was in NME for reference (if anyone remembers us), and made some life-long friends out of that guild. |
