I can't find the previous post related to this when searching!
However. I gave some advice how to make a music video. I wrote that I filmed my friend's band "De Trop" with only ONE camera at Sugar bar (Stockholm). I listened to the track "Where I don't belong" 20 times before the consert so I new where to stand and when. I filmed the song from 3 different positions and cut the chorus fotage in half to have two views of the singer by mixing the fotage. I also used fotage from other parts of the consert and from the sound check. E.g. the close up of the bass-guitar shot from the tuners of the bass-guitar was from between songs during the sound check and not during them playing anything. I have attached the result here:

Now I have uploaded another video filmed with TWO cameras at Hard Rock Cafe (Stockholm), "Come here with me". It actually ended up amongst the selected 100 of 5000(?) before the final selection for the Swedish competition before the European Song Contest this year. I.e. it never competed in public. Any way here it is:

For this video I had to stretch the studio music by 11 % to make the piece fit as they played faster on stage. This I didn't need to do on the "Where..." song. I also inserted some extra sounds from the live track to make it correct to the drummer, e.g. the drums near the end and at a break in the middle of the song. You can hear the difference if you go to their myspace page:

The videos took 3 days each to make. |

When video editing (with Vegas), I bring the snare, kick, & crash in the track view, but muted, as cues for scene changes. How do you decide when/where to change the scene? |

First of all I try to lip sync the video as well as I can. My belief is that the eye is more sensitive to bad lip sync as the singer always is in focus. The cut in scenes I try to match as well as possible even though the chords are wrong (taken from other songs). When I film I try to get instument close-ups and shots taken from behind to make scene change easier.
Now to your question. The video will drift compared to the sound as the studio sound have a constant beat (I guess klick track has been used). Therefore there is a need for scene change when this happens (e.g. the first black'n'white shot of the singer in "Come here..." at 00:33). Also use black'n'white on cut-in-scenes sometimes, like in this case, as the light may be totally different for shots from other songs, and the eye is very sensitive to that.
I also try to make the cut as non-different as possible between the cuts, meaning I check the angle of the head or guitar and the movement of of the head or guitar to avoid things to jump unnatural. Check the different angles of the bass player in "come here...", where I cut the scene according to him swinging the bass (at 01:10 & 01:23) and the singer swinging his head in the cut in shot at 02:45.
Of cause there is no point of overdo the synch as youtube will screw that up anyway.
Here is the "Where I don't..." video with studio sound in one speaker and the video sound in the other so you can compare where the cut in scenes are. http://www.rockstars.se/DeTrop_Where_I_dont_belong_Originalljud.wmv |

Generally, the only ones who notice if the chord is wrong are Bossarea forum members.

| I use Pinnacle Studio 9. It is an older version I guess as I had it for years. I heard a lot of complaints regarding this program regarding stability, and I agree. Stability is really bad. It does crash every now and then. So I have to remember to save all the time. However I do have a very old computer. It does work well in all other aspects, but I would try another program today (unless stability is better on the later versions). Read the forum on e.g. camcorderinfo.com if there still is one. |
