I have a CRC switch cleaner which has a lube in it as well. It leaves an almost waxy film on a surface. Should a switch cleaner just clean and not lube for pots and jacks or is that an advantage? I ask because I used some isoprophyl alcohol to wash the film off before I did my soldering.
Lubricant attracts dust, the sworn enemy of electronic devices.I would suggest Motomaster contact cleaner, but as it is a product of Canadian Tire, you might have some trouble finding it in New Zealand! Most potentiometers have a type of graphite imbedded into the composition of the internal components and this provides a permanent lubrication. I would use non lubricated contact cleaner for maintenance purposes and save the oily stuff for when something is stuck or squeaky
I was wondering a similar thing, so thanks, and also, if I were to use the Motomaster stuff, is it ok to get it on anything/ everything inside or will it harm certain parts?
you can probably pick up some equivalent at any electronic repair stores. do you have Radio Shack or The Source down in NZ? for some reason i doubt you guys have a chain of New Zealand Tire stores.
Dick smiths chain here has heaps of different types and brands. When I thought lube I didn't realise it left a waxy coating on everything otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
