Lets imagine you should play a gig with everything from country to death metal, and you have to use one guitar, one amp and three pedals. What would you use???
My choice: Guitar: Fender telecaster, vintage style Amp: Fender Twin Reverb, blackface Pedals: Boss OD-3, EH Big Muff, Boss PQ-4

A good question. Out of all the guitars I have, I know the most versatile one for country to death metal, would be my Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom (http://www.squierguitars.com/products/search.php?partno=0327502506). I bought this guitar less than a month ago, and I am afraid it may have become my favorite. I like the look of it, I like the sound of it, the playability is fantastic, and it's all STOCK. Crazy right? But I know with those versatile humbuckers I could get a great metal tone, and some pretty good telecaster twang. Now ideally I think if this model had a more traditional telecaster bridge, and bridge pickup, that it would be exactly the beast for the job, but I think it would work fine regardless.
The amp is the hard call in this, I think it would have to be my Roland JC-120.
And the pedals would be the MT-2, FBM-1, and DD-6. |

Dingus, I believe that Squier Standard and Vintage Modified Telecasters are some of the best hiddem gems available today. I bought my first Squier, a Jagmaster, in January, and since then, I bought 3 more Squiers:
All Standard Fat Telecasters, as they I got great deals on all 3 since they have been discontinued. Been jonesing to get another Squier Tele and possibly convert it to an Esquire, just trying to battle the joneses, or GAS as some call it... |

for a decent metal tone you almost NEED a humbucker so my Fender is out . id say
guitar - Jackson Soloist SL-1 HSS. its got a bucker in the bridge and 2 singles for the countrier stuff. although playing country with a Jackson might look odd. the sharkfins add twang amp - wouldnt even think twice. my Kustom II Lead 3 pedals - MD-2 for the metal, OD-1 for rock-country and the EH-2 for sprucing it up. (i have reverb on my amp) |

Well, with a tele and a 4 position switch you have the sound of a humbucker (serial neck-bridge). And with a PQ-4 you can get all the bottom end you will ever need. And the looks of a Jackson playing some sentimental Jim Reeves ... That would be something, a band in black outfit (even black nails), Jackson and Ibanez guitars, Marshall stacks, smoke and everything playing the most teardripping country ever heard... |

yeah...like those nutballs from finland that won the eurovision song contest a few years ago...lordi was the name of their band i think...."and now for our next number this is a song by willie nelson".... .....stratosphere the twin tube is a 2 channel overdrive and on the lead channel you can get a very fat heavy sound with a fender..i use it for the main riff in u2's 'vertigo' on gigs with the strats bridge pickup...but it won't do the death metal scooped sound...more old skool type heavy rock...or fat lead sounds..... |

It's tempting to go with modelling gear here but I guess that would be cheating...
Instead I'd chose a Gibson ES-335 through a JC-120 (Maybe I should replace it with a Plexi...). Pedals: OD-1, DS-2 and ML-2. |

ya true. what i meant though is that the opening question stated "death metal"
i would probably feel comfortable playing Scorpions or Maiden with my Strat but i think ill leave the Cannibal Corpse and Carcass up to Jacksons buckers. |

i thought i would post a 'nightmare' gig we had last week...not quite to original topic but a nightmare all the same..... the singer was ajusting some of the settings on the desk at the start of the gig(the desk sits on top of the rack with the power amps, compressor, crossover etc.....) when he slipped and fell against it knocking the whole lot over....when the gig started we noticed the bottom end of the sound was lacking....we reckon the frequency card in the crossover came loose(their interchangable) but it was a real bummer and took the whole enjoyment out of it for us..plus my gear was acting up..(see midibuddys thread on dunlop crybaby pedals)...... ......just thought i'd share this little gigging story with you guys and gals...... |
