Sonny Landreth is a fantastic reference for slide playing, he often frets notes, hammering on and tapping behind the slide for a wonderful sound. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WrlEiNlwmcg
Personally, I have 2 guitars I use exclusively for slide playing. I have my old squier strat with a rather raised action for electric slide, usually in open C, and a battered old parlour acoustic which has terrible action and even worse tuners, that I basically tuned all the strings to the nearest clean note and hoped for the best. Turned out that I'd tuned to crossnote F, a very rare tuning, which is essentially a minor open f, F-A#9837;-C-F-C-F. Fret at the 1st fret on the A flat to get a major F. It's actually a rather nice sounding tuning.
I prefer glass slides because I think the extra sweetness (to my ears) is really important for slide playing. I also always use a compressor with slide, after reading in an interview with John Frusciante that he always uses one to sustain notes with slide. It definitely helps, but I tend to prefer to use it for the benefit of seperating notes in quicker succession rather than to help other notes hold for longer. |
