Are there many bass players out there in Bossarea-land?
Please help me find a new bass amp! I haven't owned one for quite a while and am not to sure what's good and what isn't at the moment.
I used to own an Ampeg B-2 head, which I liked at the time. I'm looking for something rack-mount that can drive a 2x10" and a 1x15" comfortably. I use octavers a fair bit so I need something that can handle low end well.
I have about AU$1000 to spend (about US$750 / GBP 500).
Cheers |

My wife uses a Roland DBass 210. The only effect pedal she sometimes uses with it is an old Boss CE2B.

Has inputs for electric or acoustic basses.
It's loud (and low) enough without the need for the DBass 15X extension cabinet.

I have both a 2001 Eden WT400 and a 1976 Fender Bassman 100.
The Eden is awesome and I would highly recommend it, but I've heard that the more recent ones (since the company was sold) have reliability issues, so stick with the early ones.
The Fender is... a Fender. A one trick pony but it does what it does really well. Lots really nice of compressed tube bass drive Honestly though, I wouldn't have gone out to buy one, it fell into my lap for cheap.

is there an overall tone you are going for?
i've always been a fan of hartke for price/performance value, but i also like a bright bass tone. SWR was usually my #2. i like eden but yah, the older ones are way better than the newer ones (both in terms of cabs and heads).
the downside of GK's is you don't get a whole lot of bang for buck. most of their heads output at 4 ohms and just don't push as much air for their rated wattage as a lot of other options out there. if you like punchy mids, GK's do it best.
i was never much of a fan of ampeg as they get a bit muddy (albeit they have a large low end). |

The Laney does look good... and it would want to be for the price! Oh well...
That GK looks like pretty good value for money. I'll have to see if I can find a music store here that has one in stock so I can try it out... I've heard good things about the new GK gear.
Cheers for your help. |

our last couple of bass players use/used Ashdown stuff...the smaller combo amps can't really cut it with a full band but our current bass player has a 300watt 2x10 combo with a 15" cab on the bottom to spread the sound a bit more ..it also has a DI out built in so you can link into the desk.......... |

I'm generally looking for a more thumpy low end tone. I play mainly ambient/electronica and hip-hop type stuff on bass where I don't really need a lot of punch to be able to cut through the mix. I have a PQ-3B which is quite good if I do need that little bit of extra punch.
I currently have a Fender American Standard Jazz bass which I can get good non-bright tones out of. I'm also planning on getting a fretless 5-string of some sort soon.
Like you say my Ampeg was a bit muddy and really didn't perform it's best when pushed volume wise. I have looked at a couple of the Hartke heads - they are on my short list. I'm not sure Eden is easy to get here - I've certainly never seen one - I'll keep an eye out though.
Thanks.

I'm really fond of my new Gallien Krueger 700RB head. 500 watts, no nonsense amplifier. If I were you, I wouldn't settle for the cheap backline series made in China, but go for the real deal, although I have a very nice backline 2x10 cab. Hartke amps are also great bang for the buck, I used to own a HA-5000 that would blow everything away

Hartke are pretty versatile with their 10 band eq... but i will warn that they are voiced with aluminum drivers in mind. it's probably tweakable but not necessarily ideal (although finding a good deal is often ideal)
based on what you are describing i'd recommend sampling some SWR's and Trace Elliott if you get the chance.

No; I have the original Tiny Terror (non-bass model).
Orange's new Bass Terror should be hitting the streets soon. |
