Hi guys! First of all, HAPPY 2010! I decided to watch the Kayleih video cuz its ben some time since the last time I listened to any Marillion song. There are TONS of Boss pedals on Steve Rothery pedalboard! Watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dphpDdfZUGwand try to see how many pedals u recognize!

I remember this video, very cool song. I love 80's powerballads This guy has almost the entire 1985 catalog up there. When you freeze the video at 1:55 you can see a OC-2, DS-1, DM-2, OD-1 on the lower half. And on the top half a white one that's hard to make out but my guess is a DD-2, then a BF-2 and CE-3.
When you freeze the video at 0:22, you can see some box with the Boss logo on it and a TU-12 underneath some rack unit. There's also 2 Roland JC 120's and a Marshall jcm 800 fullstack.
18 to go |

Most of his 80's sound is from the JC120 with Boss pedals. The DS1 added on lead sounds.
The Marshall was actually just used for crunchy chords |

I remember reading an interview with Steve Rothery in the UK's "Guitar Magazine" around 1991 where he went on and on about his pedals, even spelling out the exact delay settings for Kayleigh - I wish I hadn't thrown all my guitar magazines out, I must have collected about 50+ over a two/three year period from 1991 onwards . There was one particular issue with a My Bloody Valentine interview AND Jesus and Mary Chain in the studio, talking about all their pedals. I've managed to track down the MBV interview online:

But sadly not the JAMC bit. |

Me too! I always have this feeling! LOL! Its weird when I show to some new friends (younger than me)bands like Nightranger on Youtube! I remember the day when I was at my friends office (Gladson Gois the braszilian Pete Cornish!) watching a Randy Rhoads live solo spotlight 9yeah, Quiet Riot days!!) and my friend was talking to a famous emo band here (they were there asking him to fix some gear)and then one of the guys (one of the teens) asked me: "Who is playing? Steve Vai?". LOL!!!! Its weird talking about bands like Def Leppard and then a girl says "Who?". LOL! |

I went on a bit of a google about Steve Rothery after reading this thread..he said his main lead sound was the DS-1 with the tone off and the distortion up full going into the roland JC-120,I have to say listening to some of the clips of Marillion on youtube even the newer stuff he has a great lead tone....excellent guitar player BTW....
Edit.... i found the link he gives a rundown of his gear and some opinions on recording guitars....good article

I read somewhere he came up with the riff while trying to explain to his girlfriend what all the boxes did.
"OK, now pay attention... this is a chorus. And this is a delay. Together they sound like this. You're not listening are you?"

I remember a Sunday night in 2002 and I was dating a beautiful girl. We were going to a restaurant here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in order to celebrate cuz we were together for a month. I said "check this out" Then I got my accoustic guitar and begun to play. So, it was like she was not in front of me and I said "ok, just more 5 mins". And I said that for almost about an hour! LOL! This kind of thing always happens when I begin to play the guitar!
red_riviera, I think you are talking about that interview http://www.marillion.com/music/albums/misplaced.htm#rothers |
