I am really glad that the Aussie members of the forum are safe.. and the same goes for my other Aussie friends I've not been in contact with!!
Arson in this situation is pretty unforgivable. You must find some kind of public humiliation and execution for them. |

Hi peedenmark7
Can I ask you what part of Australia your friends are in? Are they anywhere near Melbourne Victoria?
I came home today to hear that there have been *#@$%en CRETIN Looters caught & arrested, in the fire affected areas near out home. As well as more FAKE fire relief donation, door to door collectors.
Today, I tried NOT to listen to the news reports, as we all know the casualty rate is still increasing every day.
The temperatures have dropped to the 20's DegC, giving some relief to everyone. But the High temps. seem to have moved, to the more northern states like QLD (Queensland). Where member Timbo lives & where Laurie is from.

Hey Dr Bob and others
I can't get over the fact that we are burning down in Victoria (down south) and in Queensland (up north) they are dealing with pretty bad floods. If only there was some way to the water from up north down here.
I think looters and fake donation scammers should be shot. That's pretty low stuff. Maybe they should be made to serve thousands of hours of community service helping to clean up the devastated areas and help rebuild communities destroyed by the fires.
Its really heart breaking hearing about people stories. It's also very uplifting hearing what people have been doing to help.

+1...not to get too emotional about it as i'm sure people have a lot of other things on their minds like the safety of family and friends but scum who prey on victims of a disaster on this scale should be names and shamed and Ronster has an excellent idea..make them rebuild what was destroyed by the fire,on chain gangs if need be....
i also agree ..it is heartbreaking on some stories but when you hear of what some people will do to help someone else less lucky,it really is uplifting and restores your faith in humanity..... .... |

Hi Guys
Just before I went home this afternoon, my workmates Fiance called to tell us that there was yet another fire burning, once again in the Lynbrook area.
Today was a cool low 20decC but with a blustery south wind. Good for making farmland fires race across the landscape.
It looks like it was a purposely lit fire, we have had 3 fires in 5 days. Two fires, were on days where the temp. was less than or in the 20C's. ---
One a more positive note"
One of the companies I work for, is involved with Lotteries games & tickets, here in state of Victoria.
We received a letter from the CEO, announcing that all profits from the Lottery draw on Sat 21st will be donated to the relief fund, to help out "Anyone" affected by the fires. This is no mean sum. My best guess is that it will be in excess of $3.5 to $4 million Au. dollars.
I am going to ask for permission to post this PDF, for others to read.
At a lower scale, we are going to hold some company sponsored BBQ's where you donate what you can, for a Bun & burger or sausage. As well as an appeal for non-perishable food stuffs, to sent to the relief effort ASAP.
We call this "Give till it Hurts". It's an old "positive" Aussie cry, like a football chant.
Many people fled from their homes, without even stopping for their wallets & ID/credit cards.
Optus (proudly my ISP & Telco), have offered mobile phones with $1000.00au of call credits, to those affected.
Telstra & Optus have both combined forces to rebuild the Comm's. infrastructure in the worst affected areas first, & responded immediately by adding extra bandwidth & channels to the phone Comm's. systems, in areas, where the coordination of the fire fighting is located.
Vic Roads have offered free high priority replacement of drivers licenses to those who lost everything.
Some people have no ID, & are unable to provide proof of who they are. They have been given top priority by many organizations & banks.
Many people & organizations are helping out in what way they can.
I'm sure that I will be telling you more similar stories of help. The thing about Aussie's is, we are a tough bunch, & when push comes to shove, we all pull together & help our own.
I'm sure even Laurie will agree with my in this sentiment.
---edit--- I have also just heard, that there are even donations coming in from people & organizations from overseas countries wanting to help out.
Regards Bob

fire update
yesterday, there were 3-4 more large scale raging inferno's within 3-5-10Km's from our area.
sadly more loss of homes-life/people-animals & thousands of acres or land-bushland went up. the temps were very high yesterday, but thankfully dropped in the late afternoon & stayed cool throughout today.
many fires are still burning from the original ones on the 7th & 8th Feb.as well as many new ones.
there have been many days-mornings, where the air is very smokey. yesterday when the other fires were raging, the afternoon sky was grey(gray) black with heavy smoke. that dissipated when the cooler wind change arrived around 7:30pm
i have included a link to some hires photos take from around the 8th be careful there is one with a warning. unless you really need to see it, i suggest you skip over it, there are many more to see.
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/02/bushfires_in_victoria_australi.html
in our area, if you go for a walk to the fires affected area, you can see the landscape trying to rejuvenate itself. there are tiny blades of green grass sprouting from the ashes.

It was really sad to hear about the new fires on the news yesterday; I really hope that this is the end of the tragedy. Please continue with your reporting Dr Bob, we all think of you and are worried for your home and family as well as all Australians in the affected areas.
