Hi all
I have just won an auction on the internet for a BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive MIJ.
The thing is it has a silver label that says "Made In Japan".
Does this sound alright or is something wrong.
Need help before I pay.

I have an MIJ DS-2 with a silver label, so your SD-1 could of course be fully original. You can see mine at the label section of www.bossarea.com, compare. I think these labels are quite rare. |

| I suspect it's not original. I'll check the archive later but I believe it was produced with a black Japan label up until around 1990. It then got the black Taiwan label which was used until 1994 when it got the silver Taiwan label. Only NS-2 and DS-2 had silver Japan labels IIRC. |

mb999:
i believe i saw an auction or two out there within the past week or so where the pedal had silver labels with an additional sticker saying "made in japan" covering up the "made in taiwan" part.
if it was ebay and you won it you are probably open to negative feedback even if it isn't an actual MIJ pedal.
i would request a picture of the serial # and possibly the circuit board beforehand, but i'm overly cautious. |

Welcome to the forum.... ...i had a similar problem with a seller who advertised a switcher for a line 6 podxtpro i have..it turned out to be the older one which wouldn't work with my version of pod,i won the auction but his description was misleading as i think is what has happened here... ...i sent him an email to explain the problem and we both left it at that with no feedback problems and he was able to relist the item for free,i can see zentropa's point about negitive feeback but if i'm not wrong thats a two way street and he/she are leaving themselves open to a response from you.....advrtising a boss pedal as MIJ when it's MIT is very misleading IMHO as most MIJ's command a far bigger price..... |

A few corrections to my last post
The SD-1 production shifted to Taiwan 1988. Up till that point it had the black Made in Japan label. From 1988 to 1996, the SD-1 had the black Made in Taiwan label and from 1997 to present it's been made with the silver Taiwan label. This means that all Japan made SD-1's should have the serial number in the battery compartment. The serial number sticker should also state whether the pedal is made in Japan or Taiwan.

Post the ebay# so we can see the pics..
Bottom plate could have been changed at some point as well.
If you call the seller on it, he could just plead ignorance and say he got it that way. If he's a big seller, he won't want any negative feedback.. that's like VX gas to those guys.
I had a similar situation with a 1955 Rolleiflex I just got.. wasn't as "all parts working" as the description, but functional enough that he didn't really lie. My negative feedback would have been his first (w/1500 positive!), so I just didn't leave any. But if I feel nasty one day, I just might.

I just got a CE-2 and i was able to date it to sept 83 from the label in the battery compartment....the label on the bottom is black and as bossarea said, the sticker inside beside the battery had japan written beside the number..... if you think it's a dud, email the seller and see what they say..if you smell a a rat, don't pay up, if they get nasty, your probably right......like i said before, (and verivorax... )....negative feedback is a two way street.... and if they are up to no good, then the last thing they want is a person putting the spotlight on them who knows a bit about boss pedals...if i wasn't 100% i wouldn't pay...... |
