Wow...as part of my electronics technology program, I have an internship at a Computer Recycling Center which takes all kinds of electronics gear...I show up today...one of the local radio stations dropped off a bunch of stuff for us to recycle, reuse, or dispose of...

So I got 3 FREE OTARI MX-5050 2-Track mastering reel-to-reel tape decks...Worst case scenario I figure I will get at least one of the 3 working...Pics to follow, in case you don't believe me, but first I got to eat cause these things weigh more than you'd think since they are rack mountable, industry reel-to-reels...

I think my grand scheme is to use one of them to record live and directly to tape, then transfer the audio to a digital recording and mixing setup...I figure this way I can capture that analog magic, but then mix and edit with the ease of digital...I first have to get these things working, then get a digital recording studio setup...I do have a bit of a studio setup right now, it just is not getting used much...

Hi jack

Lucky basket.... great find.

I have collected 6 Reel to Reel's over the years. (love them)
One is an all tube Akai, & some even have crossfield heads.
But I have never been lucky enough to get some OTARI's

Get yourself a tape head demagnetize, if you can find one, probably evilbay
as they disappeared off the market 20 years ago.
You will need one.

Tape is getting a bit harder to find these days.
I spliced down some old computer data tapes, if that info helps.

Biggest problems I have is Belts & brake pads.
I recently got a hi-end Studio racked reel to reel for $5.00 yeap a fiver.

The all tube units are great for re-recording drums,
And they look DAMMMMMM good sitting on the back wall of the studio.

Please upload some pics of them & as you rework them.

Good Luck

Regards Bob

Don't worry Dr. 5K+ , I plan on taking pics of my progress. I just downloaded a service manual for it...I already have a head de-magentizer...I need to track down some tape...There is eBay, but I need to get in touch with some of my old radio contacts and see if they have access to any as well...
