Can someone fill me in on the quality of these guitars? I'm about to buy one for about $300 on ebay and was just wondering if they are decent (made in china)...they are originally $500 brand new and have heard they can be crappy, but I played one and it sounded really nice. Give me the low down if you have one or have experienced one. Thanks!

I don't have that particular model you're asking about, but I have a 5255 Special Jet:



I got it for 3 bills about 6 months ago. Not a bad piece of work for a "Chinese" guitar. I haven't taken it to my tech yet although I've used it on a few gigs. It needs from fret ends smoothed out, it could probably use better tuners, and I wouldn't mind getting a more substantial bridge(although I like the bridge design that's on it).

But for the money, it's a good guitar. However with these lower-lined Gretsch guitars I'd recommend trying before buying if at all possible. (I say that having 9 Gretsches in my possession)
