Mine is the....... MT-2. The only pedal I've had enough unhappiness with to go to the trouble of developing a mod for it.

A few simple and cheap mods later, mostly cap changes to open it up, and it really is an excellent compressor, all my tone is there and I have the control that the four knobs provide. I also have the half rack CL-50 and it now compares very well with that. So it's certainly not a 'no good' pedal (although I haven't used a THAT chip one) but then again you shouldn't really have top mod something to get it right should you?

Hi archimedes
Can I ask which mod/s you did on your CS-3
I know Laurie worked out his own mod, it was one of our early discussions.

I find it interesting to keep notes on what people are finding the most transparent sounding mods.

I was initially disappointing with my CS-3 dBx chip.
But with the persistence of guys here, they helped me find a reasonable compromise.

I then sometime later acquired my MIJ CE-2, & it's been in the recording chain/setup ever since.
You can hear it at it's "best" on my loop track "Holding Alex"
So interests sake.
"Holding Alex" was recorded with Just the CS-2 & a Line6 DL4 4 button Delay pedal, the big green one.

This basically covers it although a couple of my caps are different values as I started with a slightly different one that I found somewhere.

http://www.ovnilab.com/articles/cs3modding.shtml

On mine..

C2 is 0.1uf
C1 is 0.1uf (adds a bit of upper mid to the tone control which I am not sure about but I basically leave it at zero anyway, I could experiment further here)

It's big and fat now! I have tested it and rehearsed with it using various pickup combinations, especially the neck pickup, on a Strat (with Wizard 'tweed' pickups) into a Tiny Terror and if it alters the tone it's very hard to hear it.

Hey Laurie! Do you have a demo of your MT-2 mod and possible instructions...? This MT-2 is killing me I need to mod it somehow to clean it up a little. I also find it a little quite on volume... Just want a little more loud, clean(on distortion of course) bite Is this possible to do myself through mods? I have some pretty nerdy Electrical Engineer friends that can help me with assembly, but these guys don't know how to affect sound via specific resistors, op-amps, etc... Need to find the sound I want then use those parts... Easy right

lol!

Any help works for me! Thanks

The only Boss pedal that i don't like is the Boss CS-3. Too much tonesuck and i'm not a comp. fan. I own a CS-1 (SS) and i like it but the CS-3 is for me crap. Maybe a modification will help

The Boss AC-2 is also not my kind of pedal. It only works good enough with a Pizo pickup and a PA system on stage. At home is sounds really crap.

The SD-1 must be about your rig and what you're looking for. I find it to be my favourite stock pedal of any brand that I own. It's not a tube-screamer but it's great for texas blues.

For useless I'd have to nominate the FDR-1...in that it's not good enough to be any actual practical help. Great idea, though!

my vote would be the FZ-3... i recently picked 1 up cheap.. man... i played with it for an hour and so and just gave up...

i personally own a MIJ CS-3 as well and agree it does suck tone... i read somewhere that it could be because of the tone knob and that's probably why people prefer the CS-2...

Can you tell us what the serial number is, and what the chip inside is (THAT or dBx)? Thank you
