Nope.
I've run both.
Some CE-2s though are really warm - but there is no material diff between the CE-3 and CE-2, to my ears anyways.
CE-2 is a 84, CE-3 is an 85, similar years both have greenbacks. |

interesting topic. you know i reckon pedals within the same label color and factory can sound different. i have two ce2's, one black label mij, one green label mij..and they do sound different...but not BIG different. The one that sounded poor was the mit ce-2..it was just a bit flat. So i gave it to my brother. I rely on my pedals to sound good so what i do is buy a few of the same model, and sell the ones that dont sound as good.

| Couldn't different brand caps, etc. change the sound? I'm really not sure whether Boss frequently varied their suppliers, but I think that would have an effect on tone, right? This means identical schematics could sound slightly different, I believe, though, I really don't know much about it. More just a stab in the dark. Maybe your CE-2's had different caps? |

different caps, and op amps. just try it for yourself..a/ b some pedals and youll hear the differences. some are brighter, more lively..some are 'flat'. Some are fatter sounding. the ones i have noticed thaT are definately different are: bf2 ..mij mit (big difference) ge7 .. mij mit ce2 ..mij mit ds1 ..mij mit (huge difference) dd2 .. mij mij

| Svengali, when you say there is a huge difference between MIJ and MIT DS-1 are you talking about all MIT DS-1 or the ones after the shift of the op-amp (and probably more components), ca. 1994? |

i meant there is a big difference between the different op amps, i realise i should have been more specific as the first few (thousand?) mit ds1's were still the original op amp. i truly found the mit ds1 to be buzzy, couldnt get a decent sound at all. the early ds1 however i actually like and use as an overdrive only. i have one of these early mit ds1's as well,(with the long op amp) yet i prefer the mij..(caps?) when i repair this early mit(power jack..had to borrow it)) ill do a 'tone off' and publish results here.

Don't forget that the DS-1 has had two opamp changes. It went from using the TA7136AP, then BA728N and the latest versions are using the M5223AL.
I think the first and last sounds pretty similar. Not identical but I'll call it minor differences. I'm still looking for a DS-1 with the BA chip.
