I still don't understand why Americans get so into it, yeah there was some Irish immigration across the east coast but it doesn't warrant Chicago dying the river green. Maybe since the USA were the largest benefactors of the IRA, they feel they should get something back.....

I actually brew my own beer & I just happen to be racking a cream stout today. While its no Guinness, dark, thick, & liquid bread like wholesome goodness it shall be. I celebrate tonight with the traditional corned beef, cabbage, & potatoes. MMMMmmm.....

Corned Beef isn't traditional, Irish food is. Corned beef only got an irish association when the Irish in New York found it as a substitute to their Irish Bacon.

You're right though, I'm half Irish and I don't celebrate it because I'm English. I also dislike crowds as I'm pretty shy, but I do like to drink every once in a while.

No need to be Irish to like drinking.

And for many people, it is only a matter of finding an excuse for it.

In Mexico, some people "compete" in the Guadalupe-Reyes marathon. You must start drinking on December 12th (Day of Guadalupe) and keep drinking everyday until January 6th (Dia de Reyes, wise men in english I think).

hey tom west....no need to shy about your irish half.....maybe the reason why the usa gets so exited about st patricks day is because 40 million of them have some irish blood in them...... the usa have been very good friends of ireland north and south..... more than some of your countrymen in the past...thats how the IRA came about in the first place.......ans if my memory serves did the british government only pay off the last instalment of your war debt last year..?..seems like they baled you out as well over the years....

So, you stop drinking around Christmas time... why??

Do you work as the santa of the mall and they don't let you drink because of the children???

They're probably excited about St. Patrick's day because they wiped out their own history by genocide and have just stolen a lot of Irish traditions. As for the British Government paying war debt...so what it's out war debt, we didn't get any money from anyone else? I can't speak for events in the past though as I wasn't born, and I'm not willing to apologise either because it's nothing to do with me, despite the fact that I disagree with a lot of English foreign policy from the past.

oh ...just an upnote..the mayor's of chicago have been of irish descent for nearly the last 50 years and the the biggest ethnic group of city councillors are irish americans...maybe that had something to do with the river running green.....
